Cow parsley

One of the trees form the picture in yesterday’s post can be seen again in today’s picture, lthough it has been relegated to a supporting role in this shot. Instead, the star of the show today is the head of some dried cow parsley which was growing (or had been growing) at the edge of the country lane I was walking down.

As I already mentioned yesterday, I’m very happy with a lot of the pictures that I got from, what was in effect, a test roll.

  1. Excellent photo. The film grain is beautiful, especially in the out-of-focus background. And, to that end, I actually feel the tree and hills — as well as the sky — in the background are every bit as much the “stars of the show” that the in-focus cow parsley is, if not more so. I actually find the background to be the most interesting part of the composition, with its subtle tonal gradations between the highlights and shadows. In my opinion, that’s what makes the photo. The cow parsley simply exists to create necessary overall balance. Superb work.

    1. Thanks P.

I agree that the background is important. The shot wouldn’t have worked as well without the tree. I think I made the right decision to shoot the image with quite a narrow aperture too (it was probably at f/11) as it means the distant tree still retains quite a lot of structure that would have been lost had I opened up the iris.
