Gainsborough Old Hall

Gainsborough Old Hall began as a 15th‑century manor built by Sir Thomas Burgh II before later passing to the Hickman family, who modernised. Over the following centuries it fragmented into workshops, tenements, civic spaces and even a theatre, before falling into decline. Restoration efforts in the mid‑20th century ultimately saved it, and it now survives as one of England’s best‑preserved medieval manor houses, owned by English Heritage.

I’ve been inside on a previous visit, back when I had a one year English Heritage membership, but this time I just took a few pictures of the exterior.

Again, these are Lomography Color Negative 800 images that I’ve converted to black and white.

The Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge

The Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge is one of only five surviving bridge chapels in the UK. It dates to 1483 and survived as a chapel for 64 years before being closed during The Act of Dissolution in 1547. In 1569 it became an almshouse until, just over 200 years later in 1779 it became a dwelling for the deputy constable, and a jail. 109 years after that it became a tobacconists / newsagents.

In 1901 a petition by Rotherham residents was raised to restore the building back to a place of worship. Sir Charles Stoddart purchased the tobacconist’s business twelve years later, subsequently closed the shop, and proposed to restore the building. However, Sir Charles passed away before the repairs could be completed. In his will, he left £500 to be invested, with the income intended to support the maintenance of services in the Chapel on the Bridge.

Following the end of World War One, the work was completed, and the chapel was re-consecrated in 1924. Services are still held there to this day.

The Bridge Inn

Built in the 1930s using stone from the original Bridge Inn (dating to the 1700s), this Rotherham town centre pub is now (like so many others) permanently closed.

It’s not a pub I’ve ever visited and I only photographed it as I was visiting the new cinema on the other side of the road, and the light was nice. Despite being built in the 1930s, the use of the older stone makes the building look much older.

The X-Fujinon 50mm lens is pretty sharp!

The Wave

The Wave is the name of one of the University of Sheffield’s newest buildings. It’s pretty obvious why the name was chosen.

The building was hit by a significant delay during its construction when it was discovered that the original concrete pilings were not sufficient for the expected level of settlement when the final structure was built, and had to be demolished. This added an additional 18 months to the construction period andn the building finally opened two years ago in November 2023.

I took these three shots while walking past, but I expect there are a whole bunch of interesting pictures to be had from it.

Backstreet warehouses

I took these pictures (indeed six of the shots on this roll of Tri-X) while walking between Leeds railway station and The Carriageworks, where the Photo North photography festival has been held the past couple of years.

I took a slightly meandering route, meaning I traversed this street off the more well traveled path, meaning I got to see these old buildings sitting nicely in the good light.

New developments

A new cluster of office and accommodation buildings is under development close to West Bar at the edge of the city centre. The buildings at centre, and centre right are two of the first ones to take shape, but more are being built (the foreground buildings are older, though still quite recent, developments).

It will be interesting to see the area when the work is complete, and I expect there will be new photographic opportunities that arise, replacing the older, run-down industrial building that once held the location.

Across Whitwell to the dolomite works

One of the landmarks near Whitwell is Steetley Dolomite, a large quarry and refining plant to the south of the village. The large chimney can be seen from some distance and, even when the rest of the works is obscured by the low hills in the area, the top of the chimney is often still visible.

The two shots below were taken from the same spot, with my stabilised Tamron 28-300mm zoom lens earning its keep.

Around Whitwell

A mini selection of buildings I found interesting when wandering around Whitwell. The first building contains apartments but was originally a pub named The Boot and Shoe.

Again, the semi-stand development worked well for these shots.
