Garry Winogrand and wonky veg

My favourite photographer’s quote originates from Garry Winogrand: “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed“.

This quote pretty much encompasses why I make many of my photographs. I’ll see something, be it a scene or an object, and I’ll be inspired to see how my camera will render it as an image. How will the lens make it look?; What if I use a different aperture or focal length?; What about the film I’m using – how will it render the contrast / grain / light / colour? etc.

I’ll still make pictures of more obvious, traditional compositions, but even then the impulse is still the same – how will it look as a photograph? It means that pretty much anything might be a suitable subject for a photograph to be made, whether a beautiful landscape, or a dirty, rainwater-filled plastic cup left on a window-ledge after someone’s night out. Anything can catch my eye. Given that all my photos are made with an audience-of-one in mind – namely myeself – everything is good. I’m sure that some people will wonder what the hell was I thinking when I raised the camera to my eye, but all that needs to be understood is that I saw a photograph that, to me, was worth creating.

Today’s photgraph falls firmly into this remit. The first shot on a roll of HP5+ I shot last weekend, depicting the box of “wonky veg” that was sat in the window of a ground-floor flat close to where I’d parked my car. The rising-sun motif, the grain of the wood, the Pepsi can, and the slightly dirty window all caught my attention.

This is the first roll of film I’ve pushed and then home-developed, and the Ilfotec DD-X has done a great job.

Unexpected change

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the British government’s decision on Wednesday to close schools in England today for the foreseeable future, my youngest sons have effectively left school today. They would have been taking their GCSE exams in a few weeks and then leaving anyway, but those exams have now been cancelled with the results likely to be decided based on existing performance.

I made an effort this morning to take a few photos of them in their school uniforms for what is probably the last time, and it was quite moving. While neither of the boys seem overly concerned at the events – they now, effectively, have six-months off before they start sixth-form or college, which I think had it been granted to me when I was their age would have held similar appeal!) – for my wife and I it’s a sad day, and we feel that current events have robbed them of the final months of their comprehensive school time

The events are also likely to have an impact on any photography I carry out in the coming period. Although there are no rules preventing me from going out at present, I do wonder if things will change if the situation worsens.

At the end of the day, it’s the health and wellbeing of people that counts, and I have more than enough photographs to keep posting here on a daily basis, so I will deal with the situation as it develops, but I do wonder how things might have changed when we move out of it all.

Anyway, as the reversed sign in today’s photo says, “Do more of what makes you happy” – just as long as it doesn’t put you in jeopardy of course! Stay healthy and virus free! 🙂

Shadow ads

Eek! I almost forgot to post something today – for some reason I thought I’d uploaded something earlier. I’m clearly losing it! Still, I caught it in the nick of time.

Here’s a photo I took because I liked the way the sun cast shadows of the writing on the windows all across the furniture in the store.

Room with a view

Well, a room with a view of the windows of the building opposite.

This was taken in my hotel room the morning after a works outing. It’s probably not quite up to Stephen Shore standards, but I do like the image.

It was taken primarily as a potential entry for the year long film photo comp I’m in – for this month’s “Frame within a frame” subject. I can’t win the competition now anyway as I don’t have enough accumulated points – the best I’ll manage is a draw (and that’s only if the current front runner gets no votes whatsoever this month) – so I’m happy to enter something slightly more experimental this time.
