Looking out to sea

I’ve just come back from a couple of days in Blackpool, and I have to say the the sea was much less inviting looking than the calm Adriatic waters at Lido di Jesolo – even taking into account the no diving sign on this under-repair jetty. By contrast the Irish Sea looked very rough, brown, and cold.

I managed to shoot a couple of rolls of film in Blackpool, so you might get a glimpse of the sea in those when they appear here at some point.

Kites

On the last dull day of our stay in Lido di Jesolo, while my wife lay on a sun-louger at the hotel, I took myself out for a long walk down the beach. Also walking along the beach was this guy selling kites. There may actually have been more than one kite seller as I remeber seeing them fluttering in the sky in a number of locations, but equally I suppose it could be that the guy just got around a bit.m

Pedalos

I’ve not been on a pedalo for a long time. The last time I remember was on a holiday to Ibiza in the late 1990s. My son was around four years old at the time and came for a ride on the padalo with me. Four year olds are not much help when it comes to powering the pedalo, and I was absolutely exhausted before too long.

After a while I remember becoming quite concerned at how far we were from the shore – it was probably 100 metres at most (if that), but I became aware how deep the water beneath us was getting, and also that the surface was no longer flat, but now had a swell that would raise us up and down noticeably. Again, probably not a huge concern, but something that suddenly plants itself at the front of your mind when you’re responsible for you child.

In the end I set off back for the beach and everything was fine, but it’s amazing how quickly fear can rise.

Left behind

There are a couple of details I like about this shot.

The most obvious is the boat in the distance. While it almost certainly has no connection with the couple on the jetty, its positioning might suggest otherwise. Have they been left behind? Or are they perhaps bidding farewell?

The other detail is much more minor, but it’s the way that the couple’s waists are aligned with the horizon. I didn’t do it deliberately, or not conciously at least, but it’s a cool little detail, I think.

Waves

…to say hello. And that’s all you get today as I need to go out straight from work and won’t have the time (or probably the inclination) to write a blog post when I get home. 🙂

Out of snacks and ice cream

A slightly sorry looking establishment that appears to have fallen on hard times. This is on the main street that runs right through the centre of Lido di Jesolo, but right at the northern end, away from the busier part. While there are hotels and apartments all around, it would appear that most foot traffic perhaps ventured further into town for their snacks, drinks, and gelato.

Or perhaps it was closed for a completely different reason? We visited early in the season, so perhaps it was just waiting to be spruced up ready for the influx of summertime visitors?

Whatever the case it stood out as an interesting subject for a picture.

Like somewhere Buzz Lightyear might live

The building you can see in the two photos here today stood out in Lido di Jesolo by dint of its height when compared with most other structures. It has a distinctly futuristic look, like a retro rocket launch pad or something. I think it’s an apartment building though.

It will turn up in the background of a least one of the pictures to come in the next few days.

Votive Temple of Peace

This is the last of the shots I’m going to post from the Venice trip, and it shows the Votive Temple of Peace, a military chanel house, on the island of Lido di Venecia, where our ferry briefly stopped to let passengers on and off. A but a bunch of others pictures from back in Lido di Jesolo will be appearing soon.

Sorry to not have much more to say today. I’ve just develped a roll of film in hot, humid conditions and managed to smash my thermometer all over the floor in the process, necessitating a major clean-up operation. I’m done for the day, I think.

A view of San Giorgio Maggiore

Of all the photos I took while in Venice, I think this might be my favourite. It’s the view east to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, and it just looks so wonderfully Venetian. It has the lagoon, the architecture, gondolas and moorings, and even some of those smart looking wooden speedboats (which always remind me of the chase sequence from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – even though that was filmed in London’s docklands area), and just enough people to add interest but not make it look too crowded..

I was very happy when this one came off the scanner.
