Beach umbrellas

A very noticeable feature of the beach at Lido di Jesolo was the sheere quantity of sunloungers and beach umbrellas. There were thousands of them, probably tens of thousands! It’s someting I’ve noticed in other Italian resorts too (in my relatively limited experience of them), but they really stood out here.

Hotels have their own section of beach with sunloungers for their guests, although I think they can be hired by non-residents too. Some of the hotels are directly adjacent to the sand, but others might be a street or two further inland.

We visited in early May, before the main Italian holiday season begins, so most of the loungers were unoccupied while we were there. I expect it is a sight to behold at the height of the season!

Slide film blues

There’s an amazing richness to be had photographing blue skies on colour reversal film. Just look at those lapis tones in the sky above Hooton Pagnel church in this picture. There’s a tad of vignetting added by the Sure Shot Supreme’s lens which adds some even deeper tones to the corners.

Velvia blue

An insanely blue sky thanks to Fuji Velvia 50. It works pretty well with the golden birch leaves, I think.

The house on Gell Street

This satisfyingly angular building isn’t actually a house. Rather it houses the archaelology department of the University of Sheffield, or at least some of it – there may be other facilities elsewhere amongst the vast array of properties owned by the university also dedicated to the same subject.

I expect it probably was a residential property at some point but I’ve not found anything covering its history in my (brief) online search.

I went out today and shot a full roll of Velvia 50 – a roll that I bought before the pandemic with the intention of capturing some autumn colour but which has sat in the fridge ever since. Today was its day. Let’s hope I get something good, eh? 🙂

Derelict

I came across this building while wandering. I’ve no idea what it was used for in the past although, as it’s in the midst of some sizeable caravan sites, it might have been a club or something similar. It’s considerably overgrown with shrubs at the front now.

The Velvia blue skies make it look kinda nice though, despite its disuse.

Chalet street

It wouldn’t be a trip to the seaside without a photo of some chalets or beach huts. Well, perhaps it would for non-photographers, but for me they’re almost an obligation to photograph when I see them, especially as I don’t visit the coast all that often.

This expired Velvia 50 has really done it’s work on that blue sky, hasn’t it?

Coastwatch revisited

This is the Coastwatch building which sits atop the dunes at Mablethorpe’s north shore, tucked away in a corner of the visitor car-park. On the day I visited, it was still a couple of days before the state funeral of the queen and the country was still in the official period of national mourning, so the flag is being flown at half-mast.

I’m quite pleased with how this image turned out. The structure itself makes an interesting focal point, but it’s helped no end by the cloud detail, the light, and the colour rendition of my scan which has rendered the Fuji Pro 160NS very nicely to my eyes.

Beach football

This singular football goal stands on the north beach at Mablethorpe. I think the sand and blue skies are a nice contrast and make for a nice photo. I decided to use if for my competition entry for the “cloudscapes” theme.

Holy Trinity Church, Ashford-in-the-Water

Just a quick post today with a couple of photos showing Holy Trinity Church in Ashford-in-the-Water, and a view across its graveyard. The church dates back to the 12th century but was apparently re-modelled extensively in the 19th century.

Bandstand low-down

I suffered a wet knee for the sake of getting today’s blog picture, but think it was worth the discomfort and the soft focus on the forground grass along with the faint glimmer of dew give a nice sense of depth to the image. I had some expectation that the photo might be marred by camera shake as I had to hold it slightly off the ground to get the composition I wanted and felt like I wasn’t holding it completely steady, but it turned out nice and sharp. TLR’s – the flippy screens of their day!
