Apologies for a lack of words in my recent posts. I’ve had a few very busy days and no real time to think what to write, so I’ve just been throwing images up and leaving it there. Inside King’s Lynn Minster
A quartet of pictures that I took while inside King’ Lyn Minster. While I don’t think the photos themselves are particularly outstanding, I am extremely impressed by the vibration control on the Tamron lens.
It was pretty dim inside the minster, as such places often tend to be, and I was shooting Ilford Delta 100 film, hardly the best choice for handheld photography in such conditions. The available light meant that I was getting shutter speeds of 1/10 sec to 1/20 sec, even with the lens as wide open as I could get it (f/3.5 is the widest it will go, but that drops down if you start to use even a small amount of zoom). I did brace myself against walls and columns where I could but, even so, those are impressively slow shutter speeds for handheld pictures.
The fact that these pictures are sharp (although with a little drop-off in focus because of the aperture) is a big confidence boost for my trust in this lens’s capabilities.

Finishing a roll in Retford
As a direct follow-on from yesterday’s post, here are the remaining shots from the roll of Kodak Gold that I finished off during a walk through Retford.
The first two pictures show Trinity hospital, which has served as an alms house since the 17th century, although the current building was constructed between 1832-1834. It’s a beautiful looking place and one that I’ve admired whenever I drive past (usually on trips to Mablethorpe) but this is the first time I’ve taken the opportunity to photograph it.
The next picture is some grand looking house peeking up above a wall across the road from the hospital.
Then some new houses under construction…
A big tree that looked nice in the sunshine.
Some older residential properties.
And finally, another attractive old building that now houses a barbershop and a beauty parlour.

The Chesterfield Canal in Retford
About a week after returning from Dubrovnik, I drove to Retford (a town in Nottinghamshire about 25 miles to the east of Sheffield) with the intent of using up the last of the Kodak Gold in the camera after the holiday. It was a beautiful early summer day with blue skies and fluffy cumulus clouds.
I parked the car in the town centre (where I had to scrounge a pound from a passerby as the parking meters didn’t take card payments and I didn’t have enough coins) and then headed out to where the canal passes to the east of the town. From there I took a leisurely walk westwards along the Cuckoo Way, making a number of photos, a selection of which are included below. Eventually I left the canal and took a few more pictures on my way back into the town centre, but I’ll post those tomorrow.

One side of the street to the other
I took a few pictures in Sheffield city centre to finish off this roll of Fomapan 100 after coming back from holiday. There is quite a lot of development work taking place, with the Heart of the City complex delivering new, and re-purposed buildings. Some of these are built and occupied, some are not quite complete or are awaiting tenants, and some areas are cleared an awaiting work to begin.
The two photos below show scenes on opposite sides of Pinstone Street. I’m not sure what is planned for the cleared area in the second picture. It’ll probably be more retail / dining / residential, but I think it would be quite nice to leave the space open as small park or square.
