Holiday brochure

When I first saw the scan of this picture, my first thought was that it looked like a photo from a holiday brochure. I remember, before it was possible to find and book trips online, that we used to have stacks of these brochures in the house when we were planning a trip, all filled with similar shots of beaches, hotels, swimming pools, and local attractions.

  1. Hi Nigel!

When I was young, 7 or 8 years old, our family never travelled far. We did holiday, but it was usually a caravan holiday in the next county. Fun all the same! Even then though, from who knows where, I was fascinated by “a far!” I used to absorb magazines, especially travel brochures and cut out the photo’s and stick into folders for different countries and cities. I could have given a credible tour of Malta when I was about 10! Egypt was one particular fascination, it was almost a “destiny” when I did get there finally. Your photo would have certainly been clipped out and gone into my “Spain” folder!! 🙂

    Cheers Andy

    1. Hi Andy. Should you decide to re-start your folders, you have my permission to print this one and add it. 🙂

As well as holiday brochures, I remember the information booklets that British resorts used to send out on request. They would contain information about the location, it’s attractions, places to eat, and hotels and B&B in which to stay. Once, at school, we were all given a stamp and an envelope and asked to send off for a brochure and then write about the place when we received it in the post. I was given Hastings as my location and I remember being genuinely excited when, one day, a thick A5 sized brochure arrived through the letterbox in an envelope with my name on it. Everything will be online and have a banal AI summary now, which isn’t quite the same.
