Churches seem to be my most photographed subject when it comes to 4×5 large format. They don’t make up a majority, but no other subject type has featured as much (although bridges are not too far behind). As there are a lot of churches here in the UK, and as you don’t have to travel very far to find an interesting example, they make quite an obvious choice of subject matter.
This is my second photograph of this church, St. Peter’s in the small village of Letwell. The other shot was taken with the Fujica GW690 a couple of weeks earlier, but I haven’t uploaded that one yet. It will likely appear on the blog at some point though.

Hi Nige! Churches do indeed make great subjects – I’ve often thought of doing a “Dorset Church Project” but I never seem to get around to it, come to think of it I haven’t done a cathedral for ages!! Cheers Andy

Churches in small rural villages also often have the benefit of being open to the public – something that urban and suburban churches rarely do (for unfortunately obvious reasons). I usually find that, shooting film, it’s difficult to get decent shot inside due to low light, but occasionally I’ll have a tripod with me and get some interior pictures too.
I did think about a churches project in Sheffield – there are loads! – but haven’t gotten around to doing anything formal. It’s just another in a list of unstarted projects. 🙂
