Another photograph of a Venetian canal, but one where I took two photographs of the same scene – one with my Olympus Trip 35mm film camera, the other with my Ricoh GR III diigtal APS C compact.
I like both pictures. The the digital shot certainly has the edge in terms of resolution and the 28mm lens gives a different POV (as well as being in a different orientation), but I think I prefer the colours from the film shot. They’re less contrasty and rich, but feel more like what I saw on the day (although this is probably subjective).
Which do you prefer, and why?

Thanks Matt. Today was the first time I looked at them side-by-side, and the colours on the digital picture, while nice (I love that blue on the gondola, and the greens of the plants), look very, well, digital.

Indeed. The general ‘dark’ of the digital is sort of interesting in comparison. I’m hesitant to say much about an edit since it’s subjective, but the environments between the two images: one looks warm and appealing, the other looks moody and temperamental.
Not bad. Dark.

Thanks Jim. It’s a lot brighter and warmer than the digital image (although I know I coud “fix” that, If I wanted) which I think evoke my memory of the day I took it better.

Easily the first one. I have been doing the same thing lately with my Contax 139Q and my recently acquired Panasonic Lumix S5, which is a full frame mirrorless camera becoming popular with pro photographers and videographers. Almost every time I still like the film images more – the digital can do things that film can’t, like astrophotography shot at very high ISO, but I am still in love with the results I get from film 🙂

Yeah. I just enjoy my film photos more than my digital ones most of the time.

Yes, it has. I’m sure I could edit the digital shot to bring up the shadows without losing anything, but the latitude of most film straight off the bat is always a pleasure.
