Breaking the creative block

The last few days I’ve noticed a lack of enthusiasm when writing for the blog, resulting in a number of rather concise posts. I’m not sure what is causing this apart from, perhaps, having too many other things to do.

Because I write these posts ad-hoc and rarely with any planning or forethought of any kind it’s very east to just bash out something quickly so I can get on to doing something else, and I suspect that this probably shows.

I’ve had this sort of fatigue before, and I think my daily posting regime is to blame for this. But the daily routine is also the thing that keeps me posting – I think that if I stop doing so every day then the gaps between posts will grow longer and the number of posts will dwindle, which I don’t want to happen.

And so I will get these periods of low-input from time-to-time where I need to push on and break through the creative barrier.

  1. Creativity is tough sometimes. Kudos to you for keeping to the post-a-day format (something I don’t do), but the well will run dry at some point. It’ll come back. My advice is if you’re feeling particularly tapped, take a little break.

    1. Thanks. It’s something that happens every now and then, and the feeling goes away after a while usually, so I’m sure it will do the same this time. The main pressure comes from me – an odd sense that I don’t want to break such a long unbroken run of daily posts (approaching 1300 days now. Jeez!). I don’t think anyone else would care particularly if I missed a day now and again, but my OCD brain would have a fit! 😀

  2. I think we all have periods of creative blocks, in much the same way as we do not always feel like going to work, or for the more energetic, going to the gym or running for instance.

Yes, we have to work our way the malaise but more often than not we come back stronger for it.

  3. I don’t think I could keep up with one a day, not as a hobby. For me a pace of once a week, which I publish on a Friday evening, seems to work….I somehow manage to not run out of stories or images, but it has become part of my weekly routine now so by Thursday night I normally have it done and scheduled. Some of the other blogs I follow who used to publish daily, or every couple of days, have also dropped back to weekly as life and priorities change 🙂

    1. I think mine has become more habit (compulsion?) than hobby. Not that I don’t enjoy putting my words and pictures out there – it’s my little scratch mark on the face of the Internet – but I have thought about less frequent, but more thoughtful posting. It’s not happened yet though, but maybe I’ll set myself some sort of milestone for the daily posting and then ease off the gas. I’ve posted daily since the start of January 2019, so maybe dropping the frequency at the end of a year would be a satisfying time to do so.
