Ciutadella backwhacks

I had a very pleasant time wandering around these narrow residential streets in Ciutadella, what my wife would call “backwhacks”- a word she uses to refer to places in towns that are off the beaten track, or warrens of narrow alleyways.

I’m not sure if backwhacks is local vernacular only used in Sheffield or something used everywhere. Despite having lived in Sheffield my entire life, it’s not a description I tended to use until I met her. It’s a good word though.

It was nice to find these streets almost completely empty of other pedestrians, and very few vehicles (assuming they would even fit!), perhaps as a result of it being the afternoon siesta time when I ambled up and down them. I really enjoy these types of location when I find them. It’s rare to find anything similar in the UK.

A windmill and the scene across the road

As mentioned the other day, I took the opportunity during our holiday in Menorca to return to the city of Ciutadella alone to take pictures. While I still take pictures when my wife is with me, it’s not the same as wandering by myself, when I can lose myself down side streets and wait for the light and composition of a scene to improve. My wife if patient, but there are limits…

I took the two pictures here just before I entered the “old town” area. The windmill was nigh on impossible to photograph without some type of vehicle in shot as the roads beside it were quite busy, but I don’t mind this van poking its snout into the bottom corner too much.

Just across the road from the windmill was a small pedestrianised area and the play of light and shade, plus the people moving through the scene caught my eye. I like this shot a lot, and I’m impressed at how well this batch of almost 20-years-expired film renders scenes.

A corner in Ciutadella

Today’s picture is just an ordinary street corner in Ciutadella, but there was something about the arrangement of the windows and doors, the colours of the rendered walls, and the way the light fell on the scene that encouraged a picture.

There was quite a lot of foreground street in the full-size shot, so I decided to crop it to a 16:9 ratio, which I think works better and still provides plenty of detail.

St. Mary’s Church, Tickhill

As I wandered around Tickhill, I walked past the church: St. Marys. The building was open, so I went inside and took a few pictures.

St. Mary's Church, Tickhill

It was quite dim inside and I didn’t have a tripod, so these were the best I could do hand-held (and leaning against things to steady myself where I could). The first shot below was with my Olympus OM-10 and is a little soft (although not too bad if you don’t look closely). The shot after is the same scene, but shot with my Yashica Mat 124G. It’s much sharper, but not as sharp as I know the camera is capable of. Both shots required wide apertures too, which reduces the depth of field.

This final shot is probably the sharpest of the batch as I was able to stand the camera on the back of the pews, but a wide aperture was still required and so the DOF is again reduced.

Office space crop

I don’t tend to crop my photos all that often. I’ll occasionally trim a little from the edge if something distracting has crept into the scene or, on occasion, reduce a 6×6 square image to a 6×4.5 (3:2) ratio if there’s a lot of empty space, but it’s quite rare that I perform more significant crops, especially on a 35mm image.

This shot is one of those unusual occasions where I did. I cropped it to a 16:9 ratio, keeping the upper part of the picture while removing a chunk of bland and empty foreground. The photo looked unbalanced without the crop, but I think it works much better in this “widescreen” version. The Reflecta ProScan scanner I used has got enough resolving power to mean there’s still plenty of detail in the reduced frame.
