A house with a shadow

I visited the Lincolnshire town of Gainsborough back at the end of November and shot a couple of rolls of film through my Bronica ETRSi. Things didn’t go to plan and I was beset by a number of problems.

The first roll I shot was some Lomography Color Negative 800. I shot the full roll without noticing any issues (at the time), before loading a roll of Kentmere 400, and it was then that the issues made themselves known. The first was a problem with my light meter, a Sekonic L308s. It was working ok and measuring the light, but I realised after a while that the reading were a little weird and discovered that, to my dismay, that I’d somehow put the meter into cine mode. I’ve no idea how I did this, and it took quite a bit of Googling to find out how to revert it back to stills metering. By this time I’d shot the whole roll of Lomo 800, plus half of the Kentmere, without knowing how long the meter had been out.

It was shortly afterwards that I realised the second, more significant problem… I’d got the dark-slide still inserted in the Bronica! Now, this shouldn’t be a problem as the camera shouldn’t fire if the dark-slide is present but somehow the camera had been firing away without a care in the world, wasting almost half the roll of Kentmere!

I rectified the issue by removing the dark-slide and shot the rest of the roll (correctly metered this time), but I wonder if there’s some sort of fault present (or if I’d managed to somehow bypass the safety feature by ham-fisted means).

The picture shared here today of a tree casting it’s shadow on the side of this house was taken twice, once to no avail because of the above problem, and then this second attempt. I’m glad I returned to the scene as it’s probably the best shot of the day.

Happy New Year!

A happy 2026 to you all!

I wasn’t sure what to post about for my first post of the year (and the beginning of my eighth year of consecutive daily posting!). I don’t have anything that really screams “new year”, so instead I’ll continue to post pictures from the roll of Ilford Type-517 that I shot while testing the Minolta X-300 that I got in the batch of faulty SLRs I bought from eBay last year.

The Minolta performed well, giving nicely exposed pictures, and there’s usually little to fault with a 50mm lens from this period when it was the defacto kit-lens from most manufacturers.

Today’s trio of pictures show Bailey House in Rotherham. It’s currently occupied by the local council, but once-upon-a-time it was home to Grattan, purveyor of mail-order catalogue shopping since 1912. The Rotherham location wasn’t the head office, I don’t believe – I think those were (are?) in Bradford. The building is unassuming in many ways, but the protruding modernist windows add a touch of sci-fi.

Fernlea

Fernlea garden centre has been doing business in the village of Maltby-le-Marsh near Mablethorpe for as a long as I can remember. I have a vague memory of my grandparents buying some plants from there one time when I was a kid – the caravan site where their caravan was berthed was in the same village (and still is, although considerably changed from how it was when I used to visit).

Each year when I visit Mablethorpe I drive through the village and see the garden centre. Unlike the caravan site, it seems remarkably unchanged (in my memory at least) from all those years ago, and whenever I go past I have a slight worry that it will no longer be there and another little piece of my life’s history will have gone. It hasn’t happened yet, thankfully, but this year when I drove past I decided to stop and take a couple of pictures so that, in the event that it ever disappears, I’ll still have a picture to remember it.

Sometimes it goes wrong…

These pictures are from the same roll of Fuji Pro 400H as this pictures I posted yesterday. Unlike those, the light leaks on these were unrecoverable (by my level of skill, at least, although I suspect anyone else’s too).

I think the problem was caused by keeping the roll of film in the camera for two long. I shot a single frame when I visited Hull back in August but, because the film advance wheel fell off thew camera after that shot, it meant that I wasn’t able to shoot any more frames that day and only got around to shooting more in September, before finishing the final four frames in October when I went on my annual day-trip to Mablethorpe.

I shot all those during the journey, three in Gainsborough, and the final picture in Legbourne, and it’s the first of the Gainsborough pictures, and the Legbourne picture shown below.

It was after taking the picture in Lebourne and removing the roll of film from the camera that I became aware that I had a “fat” roll, the film and backing paper wrapped much more loosely around the spindle than required, meaning that light was able to get to the film when I opened the camera back. I put the roll somewhere dark as quickly as possible but not matter how fast I might move, it’s still slower than the speed of light, so the damage was done.

It’s a shame these two photos were damaged in this way as I think they would have been good pictures (I’ve since returned to Gainsborough and re-taken the first, but the weather conditions were different and the plume of steam wasn’t there, so I don’t think it will be as good). Still, despite the obvious issues, I still liked the results enough to post them on my Flickr account. I think the first one could make a pretty decent album cover!

Water tower and streetlamp

You may have noticed, but I’ve been posting a bunch of pre-scheduled stuff for the last week because I was on holiday. I’m back now and will resume the usual manual posting from tomorrow (although I guess this counts too). For anyone who’s commented on my posts and I haven’t replied yet, I will seek to do so soon.

I bet you’re bored of this water tower by now (even though it’s quite a photogenic subject, I think)… 🙂

A Rodinal problem

Today, I decided to roll up my sleeves and develop three rolls of black-and-white 120 film which I’ve recently shot. I had two rolls of Kodak Tri-X, and a single roll of expired Kodak Tmax 100 to process.

I have two developing tanks, a small one which will take two rolls of 135 film, or a single roll of 120, and a larger tank that will double the amount of film I can develop, so the Tmax went in the small tank, and the Tri-X in the larger one. My plan was to develop all three rolls using Ilfotec DD-X, but I realised when making up the solution for the two rolls of Tri-X that there would not be enough left for the other roll.

Not to worry, I thought, I’ll develop it in Rodinal instead. I’ve not developed Tmax 100 in Rodinal before, but expected it might look nice given it’s a fine grained 100asa film. So, after completing the Tri-X, I started to get myself prepared to develop the Tmax – the usual stuff: getting the water to the right temperature, making sure I had all the necessary bits and bobs required (including drying stuff I’d just used with the Tri-X). Then I encountered a problem…

I couldn’t get the top off my bottle of Rodinal. It has a safety cap which requires downward pressure while turning in order to remove it but, today, no matter how hard I tried, it wouldn’t come loose. It just rotated and clicked annoyingly. At one point I was using so much downward force that the bottle started to collapse in on itself! After five minutes of fruitless effort, I gave up on the enterprise, and decided that I would have to force open the bottle and store it in a different bottle. As I don’t have another suitable bottle (I’d assumed the bottle it came in would be fine) I ordered a brown glass medicine bottle from eBay, and I’ll re-home the developer when it arrives.

Later in the afternoon I searched online to see if anyone else had encountered similar problems and I found a recent Reddit thread describing the exact same issue. A few people had managed to remove the stuck cap with pliers or a wrench, so I’ll give that a try. The consensus seems to be that the developer crystalises in the safety mechanism of the cap, causing it to get stuck and no longer function properly.

Anyway, both rolls of Tri-X came out fine (although I did manage to drop one of them on the bathroom floor when taking it off the reel, coating it with bits of dust and a strand of hair, and necessitating me re-washing it).

No Rodinal was used in the development of the two pictures below. Perhaps that was for the best.

I finally photographed this derelict farm building

I’ve seen this building on numerous occasions when driving through the area and on this day I finally found myself well placed (and equipped) to photograph it.

It might look like it’s out on the open plains somewhere remote, but is right on the edge of Whitwell and it’s only the gentle curve of the land that allows this illusion of space.

I took a number of pictures of the building (and the tree to the right of frame – which featured in yesterday’s post) using different focal lengths and am happy with all of them. I did have another shot which is zoomed out a little further than the third shot below which I think I liked best of all, but I managed to beat the lens’ vibration compensation and introduce some camera shake. A shame.

One thing I didn’t notice until I processed the scans is that there is a solitary figure sat on the corner of the wall of the structure. You can make them out better if you click on the images and view them larger in Flickr. They were some distance away, so I wonder if they noticed they were being (unknowingly) photographed?

Yonder tree

Two photographs of the same tree.

The first is my favourite of the pair. I like the simplicity of the lone tree, but more than that, I like the layered tones created by the fields which neatly divides the picture into thirds. I’m not sure what focal length I used for this one, but expect it was somewhere between 150mm-200mm.

I like the second image too, but I had an ulterior motive when composing the shot to see what it would look like if I utilised the Tamron’s full 300mm range. The image falls apart a little when viewed larger, although I’m not sure how much of that is weakness in the lens at 300mm, and how much is atmospheric effects from zooming in through what was quite hazy air.
