Re-enactors at the Haxey Feast

There were a number of military re-enactment groups at Haxey Feast covering a variety of conflicts. I spoke to people from a number of the groups and it was interesting to find out more about the provenance of the uniforms and equipment they wore and used. Something I learnt was that the UK city of Leeds (famous for its textile industry) was a major supplier of cloth for the confederate army to produce their uniforms. Also, that the final surrender of the American Civil War took place in Liverpool, England, when the CSS Shenandoah, a confederate warship, surrendered to the British government.

I was also treat to some grisly details of how battlefield medicine and surgery was conducted during the Anglo-Zulu war on 1879.

Portraits I made of two of these re-enactment groups can be seen below.

Tractors and boats

I’ve been away on a short break with my wife for the past four days. The weather has been mostly dry and also mostly cloudy, but I still managed to shoot three rolls of film – well, two-and-a-half, as one was already partly shot before we left. All the rolls were colour stocks, so I was somewhat disappointed to not get some sunshine to show off the colours but there were glimpses of nice light here and there, and I still have my fingers crossed that even the shots made in overcast conditions will look ok (because if they do, it may break my rule to avoid shooting colour film on dull days). But I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

I’ll take them all to be developed tomorrow, but it will take me a while to scan them, and I also have a bit of a backlog of other stuff to publish first, so it might be a week or two before they begin to appear here.

In the meantime, here’s a colour shot made on a nice sunny day back in June.

Folks on tractors

As ever (it seems) my plans of finishing earlier than normal on a Friday have been thwarted. Today thanks to my errant laptop that has decided to eat all the available disk-space on its C drive, thus rendering almost all activities unachievable or vastly more time-consuming. I now need to rebuild the machine back to a fresh state so I can actually run applications and (gasp!) view webpages.

The weekend awaits, but I’m already booked up tomorrow helping my son and his girlfriend move to their new apartment, so I doubt I’ll have much time to relax. Perhaps Sunday will give a little of itself?

So, today, a couple of pictures from the Smallwood Vintage Rally as I’ve finally gotten around to scanning the last roll that had images on from that occasion.

Tractors

This is another frame from the roll of Provia 100F that was badly affected by light-leaks. I’ve had to crop this one quite a lot to avoid the effect. It’s now in a 6×4.5 ratio and probably less than half the size of the original image. It’s a shame that I’ve had to crop out some of the long line of red tractors, but better than losing the entire image, I suppose.
