Kissing gate

Kissing gates’ primary purpose is to allow human passage while restricting that of livestock. The origin of the name is supposedly because the gate “kisses” it’s frame when it opens and closes, although the more romantic later etymology alludes to couples in close proximity taking the opportunity to kiss in the confined space.

They can be a real PITA if you have a backpack and a tripod, let me tell you!

Across Cuckney water meadows

This was almost the half-way point of my walk on this day. I continued on to the front of the church and even took a few pictures in the graveyard (although I’m not happy with the results, so haven’t published them anywhere). There was a sizeable population of rabbits scampering about on the dry slopes around the water meadows when I arrived, although they all disappeared pretty quickly once they noticed my presence.

Lodge houses

There are multiple lodge houses (or, I guess, gate houses) on the Welbeck estate, all featuring an interesting architectural style. Shrouded in fog, they bring much atmosphere to scenes.

I had hoped to shoot the third of these images below from a different angle, with the ornate gates in frame but, as is usual for my luck, a delivery van pulled up and parked right in front of the gates.

Did it make a sound if no-one was there to witness it?

I managed to get out for an hour or so today to test my replacement Yashicamat 124G. I stayed local this time, going for a walk around the nearby Woodhouse Washlands. I was blessed by some decent light too, so if all is well I’m hoping I might get some nice pictures. I just need to find some time to develop the roll now!

Look both ways

Another couple of photos made near the village of Tideswell. I found this location on Google Maps while planning my walking route and decided it would be a good location for a photograph or two.

The puddles on the track add interest but also meant slick mud and, if you look closely, you can see evidence of my passing in the middle of the lane.

The pictures depict the lane in both directions, although not from the same precise point.

Farm track

This track runs parallel to the Trans Pennine Way for a while and the section depicted is open for public access. The remainder of the track leads up to the farm itself and has no further right of way. I know this because I once walked all the way to the end without realising. And then had to walk all the way back again.

I really like how this picture turned out. It looked nice in the viewfinder with all the leading lines, and the end result doesn’t disappoint me. Probably my favourite shot of the year so far.

A distant figure in the snow

I think that this is my favourite shot from the roll I put through the Holga on the recent snowy day (although not the most recent lot though. We had another fall this morning that caused chaos for early morning drivers on their way to work – my wife included).

I like the way the birches lean across the path here and the snow adds a special touch. The lone figure further down the path is the icing on the cake.
