These steps lead up to what used to be the central post office in Sheffield. The post office closed a long time ago but the building has since been acquired by the university and now houses the art department. I think some of the students were let loose to decorate the steps..

The Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge is one of only five surviving bridge chapels in the UK. It dates to 1483 and survived as a chapel for 64 years before being closed during The Act of Dissolution in 1547. In 1569 it became an almshouse until, just over 200 years later in 1779 it became a dwelling for the deputy constable, and a jail. 109 years after that it became a tobacconists / newsagents.
In 1901 a petition by Rotherham residents was raised to restore the building back to a place of worship. Sir Charles Stoddart purchased the tobacconist’s business twelve years later, subsequently closed the shop, and proposed to restore the building. However, Sir Charles passed away before the repairs could be completed. In his will, he left £500 to be invested, with the income intended to support the maintenance of services in the Chapel on the Bridge.
Following the end of World War One, the work was completed, and the chapel was re-consecrated in 1924. Services are still held there to this day.

Built in the 1930s using stone from the original Bridge Inn (dating to the 1700s), this Rotherham town centre pub is now (like so many others) permanently closed.
It’s not a pub I’ve ever visited and I only photographed it as I was visiting the new cinema on the other side of the road, and the light was nice. Despite being built in the 1930s, the use of the older stone makes the building look much older.
The X-Fujinon 50mm lens is pretty sharp!

Muriel is the title of the piece of street art seen painted on the gable-end of the building in today’s photo. It’s by local artist, Pete McKee and had been there since 2018. Sadly though, someone has seen fit to stain Muriel’s coat.
Something good that happened today…
I’ve been backing files up onto an external hard drive for a while now, but was conscious of the fact that I probably wasn’t doing it very efficiently. Today I’ve rectified that and now have a much improved, simpler, and mostly hands-off method, so I’m happy about that.

My son had a job interview this morning, which was good. I offered to drive him there as it would be at rush-hour and I thought it would allow him to prepare during the journey rather than being focused on driving. The traffic was quite heavy, but we got there with plenty of time to spare.
He was in the interview for over an hour, including a walk round the place of business, which felt like a good sign to me. Now it’s a case of waiting to see if he was successful and also if it’s a role for him. He’s hoping to apply for another vacancy that he’s been told about, so hopefully he will have a choice of options. My fingers are crossed for him.
As for today’s picture, there was something that caught my eye about this scene. The colour of the building. The interesting exhibition poster. The windows and signage on the building. And in the background, the street art.

Another short post today. I have been out shooting a lot of new photos though! I’ve decided that I’m going to do a lot more hiking this year where the purpose is the walk as much as the photography. I plan on writing about these hikes and illustrating the posts with pictures I made during the outing. I’ve got pictures from three walks in various stages of development, scanning, and publishing, so they will be appearing on here at some point. More about this when I have the first post ready to go!
