Feeling poorly

On Tuesday night I had a bit of a painful throat. Yesterday night it got much worse. I was feeling shivery in bed and had to call in sick at work today. I felt awful this morning and basically climbed into bed fully dressed to try and feel warm. My throat is swollen, making it difficult to swallw, and I’m now wondering if I might have a bout of tonsilitis. I think I might have to call the doctor tomorrow to find out what is the matter – it certainly doesn’t feel like the regular type of sore throat I sometime get when I have a cold.

Here’s a photo I took a few weeks ago at Leeds University when I visited the Photo North exhibition.

Riverside path and frustrating weather

I returned to work today following a week-and-a-day’s leave. The whole week I was off, the weather was dull and overcast, which kinda spoiled the days of photography I’d hoped for. I still went out and took pictures, but I knew the light was poor and they wouldn’t be what I might have hoped for.

Today, back at work and unable to venture out to take pictures, the weather has been lovely all day. Blue skies with smatterings of cumulus clouds and nice light. Sometimes it feels like I am being punished…

Here’s one of the pictures from last week, took while walking alongside the River Derwent in the Peak District near Calver.

Stairway to heaven (or the location of a little man)?

It’s in a catherdral, so maybe the former? Most likely just a stairway to the upper gallaries and the clock-tower though.

This picture instantly brings to mind the poem, Antigonish:

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there!
He wasn’t there again today,
Oh how I wish he’d go away!”

When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door…

Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn’t there,
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away…

Steps to the beach

There was a pleasing zig-zag to this set of steps leading down to the beach at Hornsea. A couple were descending the steps when I reached the spot and I wondered about grabbing a shot quickly while they were in frame, but they were looking straight at me and it would have been one of those slightly unnerving “they see me“-type pictures where I feel like I’ve somehow been caught. I’m not sure why I felt like that – I take lots of candid pictures – but sometimes it just doesn’t feel like it’s the right thing for some photographs.

Beach steps

At Hornsea, where the wooden groynes meet the sea wall, concrete steps have been placed to allow people to bypass the wooden structures. The sun was bright and contrasty by the time I made these pictures and, as I had a roll of Fuji Acros in the camera at this point, I thought that these steps might make for decent subjects.

Steps and stairs

I was wondering what picture to post today, especially as I’ve almost exhausted my current supply of fresh pictures (the ones that are scanned that is – I have a couple of rolls waiting to undergo their analogue to digital transformation, plus three rolls waiting to be developed AND another couple of rolls in cameras with just a handful of frames remaining to be shot).

So, I picked out the two below which have some thematic connection at least.
