Above and below

This house sat above the footpath that led from our hotel into an area of bars and restaurants. I liked the nice, isometric appearance of the structure emerging from the foliage.

Access to these properties is by sets of steps, but as they sit on the hillside between the footpath and a road that runs behind them further up the hill, there is a climb or descent no matter which route the occupiers take.

Feeling poorly

On Tuesday night I had a bit of a painful throat. Yesterday night it got much worse. I was feeling shivery in bed and had to call in sick at work today. I felt awful this morning and basically climbed into bed fully dressed to try and feel warm. My throat is swollen, making it difficult to swallw, and I’m now wondering if I might have a bout of tonsilitis. I think I might have to call the doctor tomorrow to find out what is the matter – it certainly doesn’t feel like the regular type of sore throat I sometime get when I have a cold.

Here’s a photo I took a few weeks ago at Leeds University when I visited the Photo North exhibition.

Riverside path and frustrating weather

I returned to work today following a week-and-a-day’s leave. The whole week I was off, the weather was dull and overcast, which kinda spoiled the days of photography I’d hoped for. I still went out and took pictures, but I knew the light was poor and they wouldn’t be what I might have hoped for.

Today, back at work and unable to venture out to take pictures, the weather has been lovely all day. Blue skies with smatterings of cumulus clouds and nice light. Sometimes it feels like I am being punished…

Here’s one of the pictures from last week, took while walking alongside the River Derwent in the Peak District near Calver.

Stairway to heaven (or the location of a little man)?

It’s in a catherdral, so maybe the former? Most likely just a stairway to the upper gallaries and the clock-tower though.

This picture instantly brings to mind the poem, Antigonish:

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there!
He wasn’t there again today,
Oh how I wish he’d go away!”

When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door…

Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn’t there,
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away…
