Cala n Bosch

Last year my wife and I spent a week in Menorca at the resort of Cala n Bosch, right on the south-western tip of the island and I shot a couple of rolls of film (my, still reliable, expired Superia 100) during the holiday.

This first set were taken on the first day or two as we wandered around the place – while the biggest “resort” on the island (not counting the two main cities, and other inland towns) – Cala n Bosch is still a relatively small place and easy to wander around (it’s actually two areas, if you count the adjoining Cap d’Artrutx). There’s a marina area with a bunch of restaurants, bars, and shops, but the rest of the resort consists of hotels, apartment complexes, and villas. Oh, and a lighthouse.

There will be more pictures to come, both from the resort, and also shots I took when exploring other parts of Menorca.

In Ciutadela

I visited the city of Ciutadela twice during our recent holiday in Menorca. The first time was withe my wife, although we didn’t stay long, instead catching the bus across the island to the current capital, Mahon (or Mao as it appears on all the signs).

The second visit I made solo, leaving my wife to read her book beside the swimming pool, while I took the bus so I could explore and take photographs.

I took a whole bunch during this visit, both on film and digital, and below are a few of the latter, taken on the gorgeous (and quiet) backstreets of the city’s old town area. Interestingly, almost all my pictures in this part of the city are in portrait orientation, suiting the narrow streets, I think.

I still have a bunch more photos to share from the trip to Menorca, but I haven’t even started scanning the film photos yet!

Outside a supermarket at blue hour

I spent the last week in Menorca with my wife (I pre-scheduled the posts with the half-frame pictures that have been popping up over the past seven days – I have a bunch more of those and mean, at some point, to post my thoughts on the camera I used to take them).

While we were away, I shot a couple of rolls of film and also took a bunch of pictures with my little Ricoh compact digital camera too, which I’m starting to post-process. Here’s one of them…

In an airport

A couple of edited (and cropped) candid shots that I took while waiting to board our flight home from Barcelona just before Christmas last year.

Sometimes it’s good to sit on pictures for a decent length of time. You see them differently and sometimes find things you like which were previously overlooked.

Almost…

This building is the municipal theatre in Lloret de Mar and was not far from the hotel where we stayed. It was an interesting, modern looking place, and the flowers on the terraced roof along with the palm trees, made it stand out.

I took a couple of photos on separate days, although the other one included much less of the building (you can see it here), but I’m kicking myself that I didn’t get the bicycle more into the frame for this one. A couple of steps back would have been all it needed. I can’t remember now whether I was just careless, or if there was something else that prevented me from re-framing the composition – there were streetlamps and some benches in the area, and it may have been that they encroached into the shot if I tried standing anywhere else.

Was it worth the walk?

When we visited Blanes during our holiday to Lloret de Mar, we caught a bus to get there. During the journey, as we were leaving the centre of Lloret, I noticed from the bus window a restaurant which was closed up and had a lot of hazard warning tape across the entrance. I’m not sure what had happened to the restaurant for this to be the case, but I made a mental note of it, thinking I might walk there another day and take a photograph.

And I did.

I’m not sure it was worth the walk though. It’s an ok picture for what it is, but I had hoped the hazard tape might have been more prominent. Instead it kinda fades into the background a little and you have to look for it. Still, it was exercise if nothing else.
