Punta Carena lighthouse

I’ve recently re-scanned some older negatives from when my wife and I visited Sorrento in Italy in 2018. While I was happy with my scans at the time, I can produce much better results now and I also realised that a lot of the pictures I’d taken were never uploaded, including the one posted here today.

This isn’t Sorrento, but the south-western point of the island of Capri, named Punta Carena, upon which stands this lighthouse. The photo was taken from the boat we were on which circled around the island before heading to port.

There’s a nice sense of scale to the picture, I think, with the foreground coast, the lighthouse, and then the dramatic cliffs beyond.

Big propeller

I think this ship’s propeller was placed here for decorative purposes, rather than some sort of commemoration, but it made for a striking sight.

The three people give a nice sense of scale. They also kept wandering into my shots of other things, such as the fort I posted pictures of yesterday, which was a bit frustrating as they would stand there for several minutes admiring whatever my subject was while I waited to take my picture. Obviously, they had every right to do so, but it felt like some sort of minor karmic retribution for something I must have done wrong at some time.

Making do

As Flickr seems to be having considerable issues today due to the significant AWS outage, I’m uploading a picture directly for a change.

I’ve just picked something I shot a week ago on my trip to Mablethorpe – the place where The Cut, empties into the North Sea via a concrete outfall. It’s another of those things that I’ve photographed on numerous occasions, but the light is quite nice here.

A figure by a lighthouse

A quick post this evening as I’ve just got back from the cinema (where I saw TRON Ares, which I enjoyed a lot).

Here’s another digital shot from our recent trip to Menorca. This is the Far d’Artrutx lighthouse on the south-western tip of the island. The woman in the shot was there by happenstance, but I think her presence adds a lot to the picture.

Another hot day

We’re in our fourth heatwave of the year here in the Uk, and while the temperatures are not likely to break records (I think they will just break the 30° level in some places), our homes and infrastructure will serve to ensure that it’s uncomfortable. Each year when we get these conditions I tell myself that we’ll buy a portable air-con unit, but so far it hasn’t happened. However, if this sort of uncomfortable weather continues to increase in frequency and duration as climate change continues to make its presence felt, it’s only a matter of time before I fork out for one.

It’s hotter here at present than it was when I visited Spain in June. The temperatures are much more manageable when you can leisurely walk along a beach, like the one below in Blanes.

Further views over Dubrovnik old town

On one of the days during our holiday in Dubrovnik, I left my wife reading her book on the roof terrace of the hotel while I got the bus into town and took a walk all the way around the city walls which encompass the Old Town. It was a very warm day and there is little shelter atop the wall (although there was a place selling reasonably priced drinks, and a somewhat more expensive bar restaurant at various points of the circuit), but there were plenty of other people doing the same thing.

There are a number of places where you can enter various turrets, and I took a number of pictures looking out of these, one of which is included below, and I also tool many other photographs, some of which I’ve already posted, and quite a few still to come (although I think these are the last city wall shots in colour).
