Far d’Artrutx

All taken the same evening as yesterday’s picture, these four shots show the Far d’Artutx lighthouse at the south-western point of Menorca.

The light was dropping and I was shooting 100asa film (which I’d rated at 80asa) so I had to use a slower shutter-speed to get a wide enough aperture for the camera to allow me to get the pictures. Some of them are slightly soft as a result, although not to the extent that they are ruined or anything.

The last one of the four, and my favourite, is pretty sharp though. It looks almost like a moonlit scene, although the effect is a result of the sun lighting up some high cumulus through a gap in the lower clouds.

A scimitar reflection

One evening on our holiday we walked to the nearby lighthouse (pictures coming tomorrow!). It had rained heavily earlier and the sky was still full of impressive clouds. On the edge of this road lay a large scimitar, or crescent shaped puddle, and I grabbed a quick photo of this couple reflected in its surface.

One lane, three views

All three of today’s pictures were taken while walking along a narrow lane that led me out of Whitwell and towards the main road (the A619, or Clinthill Lane) and from there, back to where I’d parked my car in the layby in front of Whitwell Woods. The weather was fine and I had to remove my fleece long before I reached the road.

I like the middle shot the best. The power pole almost feels like it’s beckoning me closer, and then point the way I need to go.

NOT an aerial shot of paddy fields

A couple of people commented that this image looked like an overhead shot of rice paddies. It is an overhead shot, just taken from a couple of feet overhead, and it isn’t paddy fields, but a frozen puddle at the edge of a farm field. It’s odd how the brain interprets things sometimes, especially without the information that the photographer has regarding the actual subject matter.

Reflected skips

I’ve made a considerable number of shots of these skips recently. Some on this roll, and others on the following couple of rolls too. Part of this is down to lockdown restrictions reducing the number of places I can make pictures, but also because I think there are a number of interesting photos to be had in this location. There are maybe two or three dozen skips of varying sizes on an area of land outside a metal recovery firm and, after rain, large puddles form and create further compositional options. The skips are in a number of different colors and, as is the way with such objects, all have varying degrees of rust, dents, and other interesting patina. It’s an industrial “edgelands” type location that may not be to all tastes, but beauty and interest lies in the eye of the beholder.
