As Flickr seems to be having considerable issues today due to the significant AWS outage, I’m uploading a picture directly for a change.

I’ve just picked something I shot a week ago on my trip to Mablethorpe – the place where The Cut, empties into the North Sea via a concrete outfall. It’s another of those things that I’ve photographed on numerous occasions, but the light is quite nice here.

Facing East North East, this vantage-point looks out across the North Sea towards Denmark which lies approximately 350 miles away.

Like many fences and railings in touristy places, the cables have been decorated with “love locks” and the odd bouquet of flowers. I wonder how many of the people who place these padlocks remain in the relationships they represent, and whether they ever come back and remove them if they don’t last? This is assuming that they can be removed of course – I suspect a good squirt of WD-40 might be needed in a lot of cases, especially where the salt air has had time to do its work, and I also wonder if love struck couples don’t just dispose of the keys anyway, another symbol of everlasting love?

The start of the Trans Pennine Way

I’ve posted many photos taken along the Tranbs Penine Way on this blog, mostly because a section of it – the southern spur that leads to Chesterfield – is only half a kilometer from my home. The photo today shows the very first time I saw the starting point (or, I guess, the finish if you travel the other way) for the main east / west route. This post marks the easternmost point at Hornsea on the Yorkshire coast beside the North Sea. The far end of the trail lies in Southport in Lancashire on the edge of the Irish Sea.

I’ve never been to Southport before, but perhaps a trip will be in order someday – I do like seaside resorts after all, and it would allow me to pair up both ends of the trail.
