Still industrial

Neepsend is a district in Sheffield that lies just to the north of Kelham Island. The River Don forms the border between the two areas.

Neepsend remains a largely industrial area, with numerous small factories and workshops throughout the area, although there is a creep of gentrification occurring and the district now also provides homes to a number of different bars, restaurants and other places of entertainment. Whether the entire area will become largely residential over time, as happened to Kelham Island, remains to be seen (a lot of the industry is still very much active whereas I think most of Kelham’s had been lost (leaving a plentiful array of old factory buildings to be converted into residential spaces, or empty land for new build homes)

Upstream

This picture was taken on the bridge carrying Rutland Road over the River Don immediately to the left of the building that featured in yesterday’s post. The brightly coloured objects behind the Gardener’s Rest pub caught my eye with their reflections in the water. They don’t have as much of an impact in the photo unfortunately, but I like the overall composition nontheless.

The view is looking upstream on the stretch of the river that flows through Neepsend. Further up it passes through Hillsborough where it is joined by two of its tributaries, the River Rivelin, and the River Loxley.

Four arches

Taken on a walk around the Neepsend area of Sheffield. It’s an old industrial area but is rapidly becoming gentrified with new flats and student accommodation popping up at a rapid rate. At least some of the lovely old industrial buildings are being saved as part of the conversions rather than all being knocked down.
