Experiments in multiple exposure

A week or two back I posted the image that I entered into October’s film photo competition. Before shooting that image (and before I even realised I could make multiple-exposure photos with my Nikon F80) I shot a roll of expired Tmax 100 with my Holga (which I definitely knew could handle multiple exposures!). None of the images from that roll were as appealing as my final entry, but there were a few interesting pictures nonetheless. Here are some from the roll.

Multiple exposure

Regular readers may remember me posting on occasion about the photo competition I enter each month, It’s approaching the end of the 2022 contest now with just three images remaining to be entered. October’s theme is multiple exposure.

I rarely shoot multiple exposure images (although occasionally accidentally), but I’ve shot quite a few this month, including a full roll of 12 shots with the Holga and also several shots on a roll of expired Truprint FG+. Of all the shots, the one featured in the blog today is my favourite and the one I’ve entered in the competition. It’s a picture of three overlaid camera – an Olympus OM-1, an Olympus XA3, and a Kodak Retina IIa. The resulting image looks a little like an x-ray photo, the sort you see from airport scanners.

I’ll perhaps post some of the other shots in a future post.

Multiple exposure

A few weeks back I wrote a post about how I’d messed up with my Bronica and made an accidental multiple-exposure (it really doesn’t feel that long ago – I could have sworn I wrote the post a week back at most!). Anyway, the gist of it was that I’d accidentally switched the multiple-exposure lever on instead of the mirror lock-up when taking a long exposure. This resulted in me unknowingly making several exposures on the same frame of HP5+.

I had low hopes for the result and expected it to be a complete write-off. However, it isn’t… Surprisingly, the photograph has turned out interesting (in an obviously imperfect way).

The main subject is the signal box in the village that I’ve photographed on a number of occasions before. However, the other shots have resulted it being overlaid with foliage and cobwebs. It now looks oddly reminiscent (to me, at least) of something you’d find in Stephen King’s story, The Mist, where a secret government experiment opens up a rift to another dimension. From it flows a mysterious mist and within it are…things.
