Nailing night-time

I took this photograph, of the Christmas-themed play area behind Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping mall, without much confidence that it would turn out. The light was dark, I only had 400asa film in the camera, and the XA3 only really gives me control of the zone-focus . Everything else is handled by the camera’s small electronic brain.

So colour me impressed by how well this turned out. I have no idea what aperture was selected, but it was good enough to get the important elements in acceptable focus. Likewise the shutter speed – there’s a little motion blur on the figure at left of frame, but it was fast enough to prevent camera shake. The exposure has given me plenty of detail in the shadows, but avoided blowing the highlights. and the sky (which was a muddy, light polluted scud of clouds) also has great definition.

It’s always great when a little camera like this delivers the goods.

From here to Timbuktu

Timbuktu, according to the pointer on this signpost, is 2,811 miles from this location. A fair distance for sure, but not a patch on how far it is to Cairns, Australia – a much further 9,423 miles distant. Luckily, the signpost – near the Meadowhall shopping mall in Sheffield – is less than 10 miles from where I live.

Nineteen

A shot taken a couple of days before Christmas in typically wet UK December conditions. It was raining quite heavily when I took this so I perhaps rushed the shot a little. With hindsight I should have either gotten lower or angled the camera down to get more of the reflection in frame (and at the same time removing some of the somewhat uninteresting sky). I have thought about cropping it, but in the end decided not to.

I do like it though, and think it might be worth a re-visit if there are similar wet conditions (and an empty car park) again at some point.
