Frosty leaf

We’ve not had any frost (at least not that I’ve been up early enough to witness!) for a few weeks now. This was shot six weeks ago.

It’s not the best ever picture of a frosty leaf (I’ve taken better ones myself), but it was a decent test of the 70-200mm lens on close-up subjects. Parts of the leaf have fallen out of focus due to the the closeness of the subject from the lens.

Nikon F80 and Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 ED VR on Fomapan 400 (@320asa). Semi-stand in Rodinal 1+100 for 1 hour @ 20°.

A tree, a bench, and a leaf

The bench to the right of the tree in the first photograph is where I found the leaf in the second picture.

There’s also a second bench in the scene, but it’s hiding behind the tree-trunk and had an old lady sat upon it.

A bit more autumn

Just a few days ago I said that I was at the end of my autumn colour images for this year. Well. turns out I’m not – I forgot about this roll of Velvia 50 that I shot on a walk along the Chesterfield Canal near Thorpe Salvin a few weeks ago.

The roll was tricky to meter with confidence. Given that I don’t have a spot meter (just a reflective setting that’s has a pretty wide angle and no meand to accurately point it) I almost always use incident readings instead. Incident metering usually serves me very well, but a canal withich has irregular tree cover along it’s banks makes it difficult to match the light falling on the meter with the subject unless it’s pretty close by, or you’re sure it’s in the same levels of light.

As a result, quite a few of the images on this roll are poorly exposed, and the ones here are probably the best from the canal-side walk.

Of the four, the sycamore leaf below is the best I think (even if it did keep attempting to blow away in the light but irregular breeze!).

Floating leaf

I obviously thought that this leaf floating on the still water at the edge of the lake was worth photographing, but I’m very pleased with the resulting picture. At the time I though about using a polariser to remove reflections and increase the visibility of the lake-bed, but I’m so glad I didn’t. The reflected clouds are what make the photograph for me.

Lacking in autumn colour

I’ve been out on a couple of days recently, camera loaded with slide film, in the hopes of getting some nice autumnal scenes. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be all that much autumn colour around at present. There are a few trees ablaze with vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red, but on the whole they’re either still green or have already lost their leaves completely. Maybe I just need to wait another week or two.

Anyway, here’s a ‘bit’ of autumn colour.
