Pictures from Little Kelham

I’ve visited the Kelham Island area of Sheffield many times, but I’d never wandered down through the Little Kelham area before. Here are a few photos I took on my first wander through.

Here’s the main entry into the area with evidence of the area’s industrial heritage.

There are streets of modern housing and apartments, such as this.

Amongst the modern buildings are older structures including this one, now housing a Sardinian restaurant fronted by a row of parasols catching the sunlight.

While the area is occupied by numerous residents, development continues to gentrify the area.

Riverside reflections with the Olympus Trip 35

A couple of photographs of the River Don taken from the Ball Street bridge on a lovely September morning a few weeks back.

Every time I use my Olympus Trip 35 it rewards me with beautiful images, sharp and well-exposed. It’s a camera I really need to use more often and perhaps in conjunction with my XA3 – another Olympus zone-focus model. Perhaps one with B&W and one with colour for flexibility of choice when shooting.

Fire escape and veil flare

I’ve walked around the Kelham Island area of Sheffield on numerous occasions and posted many photos of it on my blog. Despit this, I’d never walked through the Little Kelham section before. This section is a mixture of modern housing and gentrified industrial buildings, such as the one in today picture. It’s an area that will benefit from futher visits to see what other photo opportunites await.

This picture was shot with my Yashicamat 124G, which I think may have some haze forming on the taking lens as I’ve noticed on a few occasions that images suffer from veil flare and a loss of contrast towards the centre of the image. Oddly, it’s an inconsistent effect though, sometimes not appearing at all, even in compositions where I might expect it to, so maybe it’s not haze at all? I’ve had a quote for a CLA, but it’s quite expensive, although still much less than a replacement camera, so I think I will need to bite the bullet and get it done at some point. It’s one of my most used cameras so worth the TLC.

The same subjects

Today’s photo is of The Fat Cat pub in Kelham Island. It’s a place I’ve photographed on a number of occasions as it always seems to catch my eye, especially if the conditions are nice, as they were on this day.

I think that, because I tend to choose Kelham Island for photography outings quite often – it’s close and easy to get to and I can usually find free parking. Plus it’s undergoing gentrification so change is taking place all the time – that an element of over-familiarity might have set in and that I’m drawn to the same compositions that attracted me on previous visits – the more obvious ones at least.

There will be countless other pictures to be made, but I need to look more carefully and draw them out I think.

At the back of the museum

I’ve walked around the outside of Kelham Island museum on a number of occasions but not beein inside a single time. One day I will. There’s a road beside the museum leading to a visitor car-park and the scene in today’s photo is close to this area. Visitors walking through the museum come out of the buildings at the right of this scene, and go through the gate at the left (beside the carven guardsman). A low wall and fence enclose the area.

I’m not sure what these parts of the building are, perhaps small workshops or maybe a former office area. Whatever the case, I liked the detailing in the windows and brickwork.

Making the same picture

The photo posted here today is a composition I’ve shot on quite a few occasions. It’s one that just seems to work and always catches my eye. I’m not sure how many times the scene has featured on the blog (at least once before, here), but I know I have several different versions. This one is, I believe, the first time I’ve shot it on 6×9 though.

Down a wet cobbled street

The Kelham Island area of Sheffield has provided me with pretty good pickings from a photographic point of view and it’s often a place I’ll head to if I’ve got some camera time but no real idea of where to go. The area isn’t huge but there are still parts of it that I’ve not seen. Plus, the ongoing gentrification means that there are always new things popping up down there.

It’s a little sad to see the old industry converted into apartments, but the industry was mostly gone anyway and the other option would probably have been a decline into dereliction. At least this way a lot of the architectural heritage survives with new purpose.

It was a day of changeable weather when I made this photo and five minutes earlier I’d had to rush for shelter (along with a few other people) when the heavens opened. The rain on the floor in the photo is the evidence of the downpour.

Ball Street bridge

The Ball Street bridge crosses the River Don a little upstream from Kelham Island and is immediately adjacent to Kelham Weir. The bridge dates to 1856 and was built by Milton Iron Works at Elsecar. The bridge holds grade II listed status.

The bridge is now only open to non-motorised traffic (although maybe motorcycles too). I believe that this is to manage road traffic around the area.
