Physics in action

A further image from Capri (I think I’m posting these while I figure out how to post a batch of much more recent pictures).

I don’t know if this boy-and-elephant sculpture is a permanent fixture outside the Prada store in Capri, or if it was just a temporary exhibit, but it deserved a photo.

Chainmail

Another picture from our Sorrento trip that I’ve recently re-scanned, but which I don’t believe has ever featured on the blog before (from my quick search, at least).

Again, this was taken on the island of Capri and this interesting sculpture of a woman formed from bike chains was an eye-catching sight.

Punta Carena lighthouse

I’ve recently re-scanned some older negatives from when my wife and I visited Sorrento in Italy in 2018. While I was happy with my scans at the time, I can produce much better results now and I also realised that a lot of the pictures I’d taken were never uploaded, including the one posted here today.

This isn’t Sorrento, but the south-western point of the island of Capri, named Punta Carena, upon which stands this lighthouse. The photo was taken from the boat we were on which circled around the island before heading to port.

There’s a nice sense of scale to the picture, I think, with the foreground coast, the lighthouse, and then the dramatic cliffs beyond.

Ave Maria, an end to the Italian photographs

Today’s is the last of my photos from the trip to Italy I took over two months ago now. It’s quite a nice one to go out on though. I’d seen this church while walking around the town with my wife, but it was the next street over so I didn’t get chance to get close. On the last full day of the trip though I went for a walk while my wife sat beside the pool reading her book, so took the opportunity to grab a picture.

Over the past few days I’ve been scanning a roll of expired Kodak Elite Chrome that I shot while visiting this year’s Sheffield Steam Rally. I used my Canon Sure Shot Ace and all the pictures are noticeably under-exposed. I never overexpose slide film as it tends to retain its limited exposure latitude, even if it’s lost some of it’s colour tonality, and have generally had well exposed results when shooting other expired E6 emulsions. So in this case I don’t know if it’s the film (it did expire over 20 years ago!), or the camera’s metering – although I’ve had the Ace a few years, this was only the second time I’ve used it, although there were no issues with underexposure previously.

Whatever the case, it will make a good subject for a new Expiry Files post, especially given I haven’t done one of those for ages, despite promising to try and do more of them.

Blue glass balconies

It’s Friday and, once again, instead of it being POETS* day, I’ve only just finished work because I’m busy, I’m behind on stuff, and have another very busy week coming up that I’ve barely prepped for, which means I’m heading into another weekend where work will be preying on my mind if I’m not careful.

Today’s picture is the penultimate photo from the Italy trip – a batch I’ve managed to stretch out for approaching two months! One more to come, then onto something else.

* P##s Off Early. Tomorrow’s Saturday, for those not in the know. And also, for anyone who doesn’t have the same usage of the vernacular, “p##s off“, can mean both “go away“, or “to annoy” here in the UK. 🙂

Looking out to sea

I’ve just come back from a couple of days in Blackpool, and I have to say the the sea was much less inviting looking than the calm Adriatic waters at Lido di Jesolo – even taking into account the no diving sign on this under-repair jetty. By contrast the Irish Sea looked very rough, brown, and cold.

I managed to shoot a couple of rolls of film in Blackpool, so you might get a glimpse of the sea in those when they appear here at some point.

Out of snacks and ice cream

A slightly sorry looking establishment that appears to have fallen on hard times. This is on the main street that runs right through the centre of Lido di Jesolo, but right at the northern end, away from the busier part. While there are hotels and apartments all around, it would appear that most foot traffic perhaps ventured further into town for their snacks, drinks, and gelato.

Or perhaps it was closed for a completely different reason? We visited early in the season, so perhaps it was just waiting to be spruced up ready for the influx of summertime visitors?

Whatever the case it stood out as an interesting subject for a picture.

Like somewhere Buzz Lightyear might live

The building you can see in the two photos here today stood out in Lido di Jesolo by dint of its height when compared with most other structures. It has a distinctly futuristic look, like a retro rocket launch pad or something. I think it’s an apartment building though.

It will turn up in the background of a least one of the pictures to come in the next few days.

Votive Temple of Peace

This is the last of the shots I’m going to post from the Venice trip, and it shows the Votive Temple of Peace, a military chanel house, on the island of Lido di Venecia, where our ferry briefly stopped to let passengers on and off. A but a bunch of others pictures from back in Lido di Jesolo will be appearing soon.

Sorry to not have much more to say today. I’ve just develped a roll of film in hot, humid conditions and managed to smash my thermometer all over the floor in the process, necessitating a major clean-up operation. I’m done for the day, I think.

A view of San Giorgio Maggiore

Of all the photos I took while in Venice, I think this might be my favourite. It’s the view east to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, and it just looks so wonderfully Venetian. It has the lagoon, the architecture, gondolas and moorings, and even some of those smart looking wooden speedboats (which always remind me of the chase sequence from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – even though that was filmed in London’s docklands area), and just enough people to add interest but not make it look too crowded..

I was very happy when this one came off the scanner.
