Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers

This sculpture, situated on the seafront of Scarborough’s north bay, is titled Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers. It was created by sculptor Ray Lonsdale and depicts Freddie Gilroy, an old soldier who helped liberate the Bergen‑Belsen concentration camp during the second world war. Lonsdale created it as a tribute to Gilroy, who was his friend, and as a broader reflection on war and the Holocaust.

It was only meant to be displayed in Scarborough for four weeks in 2011 but a local resident stepped in to buy it so it could stay in the town.

What isn’t apparent from my picture is the scale of the figure, which is twice life size, and dwarfs people as they pass by.

Morgan Plus 4

This Morgan was parked in front of a big white hotel atop the cliffs of Scarborough’s north bay. I’m not sure what vintage the car is – they were made from the 50s to the turn of the century, with a new version being released more recently.

Hotel duplicates

When I was on holiday this year, I decided to “live post” each day, transferring pictures from my digital camera to my phone, and from there to the blog.

One of the pictures I shared was the view from the room in our (very nice) hotel. You can see the picture here.

Today’s photos are of the same view, the only difference being the fact that these were shot on Kodak Colorplus on my Olympus Trip 35.

While the digital shot has much more resolution, I think I prefer the rendering of the film versions.

The hotel in the picture isn’t part of the complex we stayed in, it’s the one next door. 🙂

Hotdog carts

On the streets of Manhattan it seems there’s barely a corner without a hotdog cart pitching their wares. I seem to recall that tlast time I visited NYC that the carts sold mostly hotdogs (and maybe pretzels), but the variety seems to have increased to include gyros and other foods now. Almost all of the carts are Sabretts, although there was the odd Nathan’s vendor (didn’t there use to be another prolific hodog cart brand in NYC too?). Sadly, I didn’t have a hotdog on this visit (although I did get a Philly Cheesesteak), but here are a couple of photos of carts.
