Anyone for ice-cream?

When I spotted the couple in the distance when I framed this shot, I knew they would be out of focus because I’d set a wide aperture to give the giant ice-cream cone some seperation from the rest of the scene, but liked how they would fill a gap in the frame.

What I didn’t really notice – partly due to making sure I had focus on the ice-cream, but also because I had to be quick as I was in a queue and about to be served my own, normal-sized ice-cream – was that the man’s top was the same shade of pink as the “strawberry” swirl in the foreground cone, and his female companion’s top a similar colour to the blue flavour (whatever that might be). A nice little piece of synchronicity. 🙂

Street corner

I recently shot a roll of expired Ektachrome 100 EPN that I’ve had sat in the freezer for quite a while now – since last Christmas in fact when they were kindly gifted me by my Emulsive Secret Santa. I like the thrill of shooting expired film, there’s a certain frisson of tension around how the shots might turn out. On the other hand though, I never use it for outings where I want my shots to count – holidays, day trips, special events and so forth that I might not get the chance to visit or photograph again. I still aim to get shots I like though – the last thing I’d want is for it to be wasted – and so I shot this roll on a very nice sunny day last month.

Stop at Sidney Street

The subject matter is just a bunch of things that I thought might look nice (to me at least). I’m not sure what genre this sort of thing falls under – I’m tempted to say it’s inspired by the New Topographics movement, but I’m not sure it that’s the case or not. A sort of halfway house between street and architecture I guess. Who needs labels anyway?

The film was shot at box speed and turned out pretty nicely I think. There’s a bit of colour shift towards magenta but nothing major, and it has a subtle, overexposed Portra look about it that’s nice.

Doggie by a window

I have a camera review planned for the blog sometime soon, I’d hoped to have written it before now but – even though I’m off work this week – I’ve not gotten around to it yet. The thing with having a week off is that I have a lot of stuff I’ve planned to do while I have the chance. Probably too much stuff.

While some of it I’ve achieved (including cleaning and shooting the camera I plan to review) , others – including some mundane, but desireable things like just watching some movies and reading some of my big pile of photobooks – have yet to be done. And I really want to do some of those mundane but relaxing things before work comes beckoning again. I might get chance to write the review tomorrow. Or I might not.

In the meantime, there might be a series of short posts while I figure out what I’m doing with my time. So, today, here’s a picture of a dog outside a cafe…

Starsky & Hutch

I did consider sliding across the bonnet (or should I say “hood”?) when I saw this Ford Gran Torino in full Starsky & Hutch colour-scheme, but I’d have either ended up sprawled unceremoniously across the front, or on my backside on the floor. I’d have been risking a potential beating too I think! 😀

A statue, a sign, and an onlooker

Today was my annual trip to the seaside town of Mablethorpe. I wasn’t sure I’d get there this year what with the pandemic, but managed to sneak in a visit before the Covid cases rise to the extent we can’t travel again (although I hope that doesn’t happen!).

I don’t want to say much about it today because I only got home about half-an-hour ago; I’m very tired from the walking and driving; and I want a shower! Assuming no disasters, there will be photos from the trip in upcoming blogs.

Anyway, here’s a random image of a statue, a sign pointing to a church (I didn’t photograph this one!), some houses, and a bloke looking at me and probably wondering what I’m doing…
