Ford Capri

If there was one car that most teenage boys yearned for when I was such an age, it was the Ford Capri – Britain’s version of the fastback coupes and saloons from across the pond. It was obviously smaller than it’s transatlantic cousins, and was supposedly a bit of a pig to drive – stories abound of having to put a bag of cement in the boot to improve the handling – but it looked cool and Bodie, from the popular TV show The Professionals drove one.

Ford recently brought back the Capri name in a new model, but it really doesn’t have the same appeal, being a boxy, squashed-looking design nothing akin to the sleekly desirable air of the original versions.

Here are a few old Capri’s at this year’s Classics on the Moor event in Sheffield.

Invacar (in colour)

This is not the first time I’ve posted a picture of an Invacar on the blog – you can see an earlier post about them here which covers them in a little more detail.

That post had black and white photos though, which were of a slightly worse for wear model of the vehicle. This time you can see the classic “ice blue” colour scheme that made them so familiar back when I was young.

Old truck. Older carriage.

I’ve posted a picture of this ice cream truck before, that picture shot with my large format camera on the same day I took this photo, but the carriage in the second shot was only photographed with my Bronica ETRSi.

Waterside Ice Cream

I don’t have a clue which type of carriage it is – I did look online, but backed out of the rabbit-hole of potential sunk time before I lost hours to detective work. It’s difficult to know just how old it might be. It could date back to when such things were a primary mode of transport, or it could also be a more recent vehicle, used for displays or special occasions or something, which has been left to decay. Whatever the case, it was interesting to see it there, albeit behind a metal fence that adds little to the picture.

Old-school ice cream

This vintage ice-cream truck was parked close to the car park when I visited the Humber Bridge and made for an obvious subject for a picture. Annoyingly, it’s another shot marred by the out-of-focus issue that I wrote about yesterday, and I still have another two sheets to develop where I also used the yellow filter that I suspect to be the cause, so those might also exhibit the same problems.

Beetle

As a child, VW Beetles were a commonplace sight, whether parked on the street or seen driving along roads, their passage announce by distinctive air-cooled engine sound. Sometimes I would be overjoyed to see one that had been painted to look like Herbie.

But over time they faded from view and it wasn’t until the new, much worse looking (in my opinion), New Beetle arrived in the late 1990s that the cars began to be widely seen again, on British roads at least. The New Beetle lasted from 1997 to 2011, when it was replaced by the sleeker-looking Beetle A5, which itself was finally retired in 2019.

The original Beetle design is a classic and as a result there are still many being maintained, so it’s easy to find one (or several) at classic car shows, and they also turn up in customised form. There’s a customised green Beetle often to be found parked near my local fish & chip shop which I’ve thought about photographing but, apart from a digital snap I took a few years ago, I haven’t gotten around to doing so.

When I spotted this pristine Beetle in Lido di Jesolo, I just had to get a few pictures. It’s nice to see one in such pristine condition in the wild.

Beetle bonnet

I guess that photos like the one posted here today are something of a cliche these days – pictures of the fronts (and rears) of cars, especially classic cars, is something that seems to have become a widespread trend. Nevertheless, they can still be interesting pictures, I feel, so please excuse another one appearing. 🙂

Small cars with grand names

This little car here is the somewhat graniosely named Vanden Plas Princess 1100. It’s a model from the BMC ADO16 range of which there were multiple variants. The Vanden Plas version was at the upmarket end though, with the model sporting leather interior furnishings and a walnut dashboard. It also had a posh-looking radiator grille by way of distinction from its lower spec stablemates.

Lincoln Continental

This big barge of a car was at the Sheffield Steam Rally when I visited. I’m not sure what year this dates from – I would guess late 70s, but I could also be out by some margin thanks to my relative ignorance of such things. It looks nice in a photograph though!
