Out of the archive (both a picture AND a camera)

I’ve been spending a little time looking back at older pictures in my archive recently. Sometimes there are images hidden away in there that I didn’t spot the potential of at the time (sometimes, usually with digital, because I just had too many to go through)

Here’s one of those images, taken somewhere in Manhattan (I’m not sure where exactly – perhaps someone recognizes the spot – maybe the Applebees will give it away) during our last visit back in 2019. I really like the tonality from the bright sunlit buildings at the top of the frame, to the shadowy fall off at the bottom.

It made me think that I ought to shoot with my micro four thirds kit again – it’s been sat mostly unused for several years (apart from an outing a couple of weeks ago where I wanted to test some ND grad filters that I’m planning on using with my film cameras).

Despite its age, it’s clearly still a very capable camera. It’s also the only digital camera I own that lets me shoot at a 40mm prime focal length, which is something I like. It will pair nicely with the 28mm of my Ricoh GRIII in that regard.

And so I took it out with me today and shot a bunch of frames. My goal was to get a single picture that I liked, but I ended up with several. I’ll perhaps share some here when I’ve processed them.

On a corner

My son had a job interview this morning, which was good. I offered to drive him there as it would be at rush-hour and I thought it would allow him to prepare during the journey rather than being focused on driving. The traffic was quite heavy, but we got there with plenty of time to spare.

He was in the interview for over an hour, including a walk round the place of business, which felt like a good sign to me. Now it’s a case of waiting to see if he was successful and also if it’s a role for him. He’s hoping to apply for another vacancy that he’s been told about, so hopefully he will have a choice of options. My fingers are crossed for him.

As for today’s picture, there was something that caught my eye about this scene. The colour of the building. The interesting exhibition poster. The windows and signage on the building. And in the background, the street art.

That’s torn it

I’ll post one of my weird photos today that I like a lot but which I expect many people will just wonder what on Earth I was thinking when I fired the shutter…

It’s just an advertising hoarding. One with a torn advertisement. I don’t drive past this often, but have done so on a handful of occasions recently and each time I passed it caught my eye. Usually this indicates that I ought to make a photograph.

I’m not really sure what drew me to it, although it was the faded, half-torn Colonel Sanders that first caught my attention. I also like the way that the badly faded KFC advert is peeling away to reveal a still fresh-looking advert for (I think) Sky Sports beneath, where it emerges butterfly-like from it’s pale cocoon, still daubed with the remnants of paste, almost like the man is yelling the remains of the paper away. I like how the splash of blue in the otherwise overcast sky is mirrored by the blue on the billboard. I like the cluster of poppies giving a splatter of red to the dusty edge of the car-park besides which the billboard stands.

I like it.
