While I sometimes crop digital photos to a panoramic ratio, it not something I tend to do with film photographs which, outside of a little straightening, or minor bits of resizing to remove edge-of-frame distractions, I tend to not crop at all.

However, when looking at the scans of some of the photos I took with my Bronica ETRSi at this year’s Sheffield Steam Rally, I realised that large swathes of the top and bottom of the images were filled with uninteresting sky and grass, so I decided to see how they would look with that stuff cropped out. Turns out they looked pretty nice, I thought, so here they are today.

I think it helps that the 75mm Zenzanon lens is very sharp, and that Acros is a fine-grained film, but it’s something I’ll remember next time my in-camera framing doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Flamborough Head lighthouse

There are two lighthouses at Flamborough Head. The original lighthouse was completed in 1674 but never lit. It stands at the edge of a golf course now with a Grade II listing.

The new lighthouse was first lit in December 1806 and remains in use today, although the last keepers left when the light was automated in the 1990s. As with its older sibling, it also has a Grade II listing.

Standing atop the promontory, the light can be seen from numerous places along the coast as well as, obviously, from the sea. Whenever I’ve visited places like Scarborough or, when I was younger, Filey, I would look for the light in the south as evening arrived. There is something evocative and even a little magical about catching that distant flash of illumination as the beam sweeps your position.

I took a number of pictures of the lighthouse on this trip, so don’t be surprised if they turn up here in the coming days. 🙂

This is another of those locations that I’ve photographed on a number of occasions. Something about it draws my eye.

I’m not sure if any activity currently takes place in the corner shop here. It has the look of a cafe, but I don’t think it is, although maybe it was sometime in the past. I had a look on Google Maps which allows me to see how it looked at a number of points in time from 2008 to the present. It has housed at least two businesses in that period: and IT repair shop, and something called “Amazing Cave“, which looked to be some sort of vintage / antiques / brik-a-brak- type place.

Amazing Cave looked to have opened in the autumn of 2012 (there’s a picture from July that year where it looks like the stock is inside, but the store is not yet ready for customers). Sadly, in the next available image from October 2014, it looks like the place might already have gone out of business or, to be more positive, perhaps moved to a new site. The website address of the store can be seen above the windows but is now listed as being available.

The upper floors of the place appear to be in use as flats now.

Signs of a little pig?

A few weeks ago (although I would swear it wasn’t that long ago!) I posted a picture of a structure built of sticks. Today I have another couple of photographs of the same twiggy building plus a photo of another, neighbouring edifice.

I’ve still not come across anyone actually building these things – not that I spend that much of my time wandering through the trees – and I’m still curious as to whether their construction is some sort of organised activity, or just groups of kids making dens? Few of the trees around this area are suitable for treehouses, so perhaps these make an alternative?

The other option is that the second of the three little pigs has decided this would be a good place to build a fortress against the Big Bad Wolf. I didn’t see any wolves, just a few dogs being walked. Nor did I make any attempt to see if I could huff and puff and blow the house in.
