Following yesterday’s photos of Ford Capri’s, here are a couple of shots of it’s stablemate, the Cortina. If the Capri was the British equivalent of a US fastback, then the Cortina was probably it’s muscle-car brother – most particularly, I think, in the Mk III version.
The one shown here is a Mk II, which while still a nice looking car, lacks the sculpted shape of it’s descendant.

The first car I drove was a Mark I Cortina with bench front seat and column gear change

I always liked the Cortina, but I can’t honestly remember if I ever rode in one (I definitely never drove one). I’m guessing I must have been in at least one as a minicab passenger at some point, and I have a vague idea that my uncle might have had one at some point, but who knows!

As a Yank, I’ve never seen a Cortina except in photos.

They were extremely common throughout my childhood and teenage years, until they were discontinued and replaced by the Ford Sierra.
The family of Ford cars that were around at the time – the Escort, Capri, Cortina, and Granada – were pretty ubiquitous on UK roads.

As a wee lad, nearly every driveway had one in the 1970’s …accept my parents house, they had a Toyota!
