Spider webs have an odd feature of being both a little creepy (have you ever walked face-first into one in the dark?) and beguilingly elegant (watching a spider construct one of these natural works or architecture is both fascinating and also slightly humbling). Sometimes though, when they’re festooned with dewdrops and bathed in a shaft of early morning sunshine, they’re simply beautiful.

It was a pretty cold day when I took the shot and the temperature meant that the clouds of vapor from this man’s e-cigarette were all the more prominent. I took one shot with his head in a cloud of smoke, and then this one in the midst of emission.

I visited Wortley Hall with my wife because they had a Christmas Fayre on at the end of November. We bought an illuminated Christmas tree and I took a few photos, including this one.

Ford is a hamlet in Derbyshire, a few miles from where I live. This is the view looking west from just outside the Bridge Inn.

After parking the car with the intention of a walk in the countryside, I spotted these houses across the road. I liked the uniformity of shape and the way they receded down the hill.

This charming looking duck waddled over to me, perhaps hoping for something tasty to peck at. Instead, she had to make do with a portrait.

I obviously misjudged the metering on this shot and underexposed the photo. However, I think it’s another one of those cases where a happy accident produces fortuitous results. The deep shadow between the houses emphasises the man and the high contrast does the same for his shadow on the wall.
