Cobbled

I took a number of pictures on this street in Hull a couple of month’s back. This is the only medium format shot amongst them. I like the shot and the composition, but wish there had been a little more light – I had to open up the aperture to get the photo (a side-effect of my Mess-Ikonta having a slow / sticky shutter at speeds below 1/100 sec, which forces me to open it up in lower light, rather than dropping the shutter speed). As a result, the focus is a little soft in the foreground.

  1. I love Hull, I went to uni there! Really like the picture too! I wanted to ask about the aperture and shutter speed. I’m quite new to photography and still trying to figure out what they do, any advice?

    1. Hi cracklepopsnap.

If you look up the Exposure Triangle online (or on Youtube), you’ll find loads of useful info – better than I can explain here – but in a nutshell, shutter speed determines how long the shutter is open – the longer the time, the more light gets into the camaera. Aperture sets how wide the lens is open – the wider it’s opened, the more light will get in when the shutter is fired.

They both work in conjunction with the ISO setting of the camera (or ASA if you’re using film) and the three setting will determine whether your photo is correctly exposed or not. Shutter speed and aperture also have other effects on the result depending on how they are set, such as altering the depth of field (how much of the shot is in focus from front to back), or allowing you to freeze or blur motion.

Try this page as an explanation: https://fstoppers.com/education/exposure-triangle-understanding-how-aperture-shutter-speed-and-iso-work-together-72878
