Rainy day

I fianlly got around to developing a new roll of film today, so I have fresh images to use in the blog. I’ve also got the two rolls I shot yersterday, but one of those will be going to the lab (it’s a roll of Provia 100 and I don’t have the means to develop it at home), and the other (a roll of FP4+) will wait until next weekend. I have 12 potential shots from the roll I developed today though. Or I will when they’re all scanned – I’ve only had time to scan the first three shots so far.

This one was taken a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Doncaster with my wife and sister-in-law. My aim was to try and get “rainy” photos as that’s the theme for the photo-comp this month. Heavy rain had been forecast, so all looked like it might be good to get a bunch of suitable pictures but, in the end, this is the only one I got. I took two more shots on the day, but neither of them feature much rain. The problem was that, while it had rained earlier, when we arrived it had stopped again so all I had to play with was damp streets and heavily-overcast skies. I felt somewhat annoyed by this betrayal by the weather – made worse by the fact that I had to hang around for ages while my wife and her sister did some shopping. Luckily though, the heavens opened for a short while and I was able to get the picture below. It was a very quickly grabbed image, but it fits the theme. It’s not really rained much since that day (at least not when I’ve had opportunity to go out with a camera), so this image will have to suffice.

Knowing it was going to be a glomy day I decided to push the HP5+ to 1600asa to enable useable shutter speeds without opening up the aperture too much for what I wanted to achieve.

A photo after a failed laptop build

I made this picture on the day I went into town to have my laptop rebuilt. Unfortunately the re-build was a complete failure and a waste of my time but I did grab a few pictures on the way. This was a vey quickly grabbed shot as I liked the way the people positioned between or against the pillars.

Another well lit house (and the increasing cost of film)

This might be a bit of a theme over the next few days – photos of houses that is. I’m down to my last few frames of scanned, un-posted photos, and all of them are of houses (except for one of a fire station). I have finished a roll of HP5+ today that’s been in my XA3 for a while, so if I can get that developed tomorrow, then that should give me a bit more fuel in the tank before resorting to the archive.

It doesn’t seem that long that I was four or five rolls of un-scanned photos in front!

I was disappointed to see that Kodak have announced further price increases. Kodak’s films are already expensive, with things like Portra and Ektachrome pretty much off my shopping list already, but the proposed rise of “at least” 20% will blow my desire to buy them completely out of the water. This will put a 5-pack of something like Portra 400 at somewhere in the region of £60-80, and I expect that even stuff like Colorplus and Gold will be prohibitive – settling into the price ranges that the professional films were at a few years ago.

I’ve still got a decent stock of color film in the freezer, at least enough to keep me going for the next year or so based on the rate I shoot it at, and I tend to favour B&W photography anyway, and there are still a good number of reasonably priced black-and-white films available at present (here in the UK at least), and my preference is for Ilford’s films for B&W anyway. It’s a shame about these increases though – I want to support Kodak, but I’m not sure my wallet will allow it.

Lifeboat station

This is the lifeboat station on the promenade at Mablethorpe. If you look closely in the circular window to the right of the building, there’s a small, knitted caostguard figure peering out. You can see them better in this picture I took a few years ago.

Tea and cake and dead insects beside the sea

This was taken as I sat with a cup of tea and a flapjack on a bench near the cafe. Sadly the flapjack was a little melted from being in the full sun and, to my dismay, a small insect decided to take it’s own life by drowning itself in my tea before I could finish drinking it. Nontheless, as I sit typing this after a full week of complete and upper upheaval while we have the whole of the the upstairs and the staircase decorated, a melted flapjack and insect-polluted tea on a sunny day beside the sea would be quite welcome.

As I might not have full access to my PC to post for a few days while we’re having some decorating done, I’ve pre-written a few posts with older pictures that I haven’t posted before (I hope!). As I’m a little stuck for time to write them, they’ll each have this same boilerplate text. If I get back on my PC earlier than usual I’ll probably put the remaining ones back into the drafts folder for emergencies.

Fetching and carrying

As the weekend draws closer, so does the dread job of emptying my office ready for it being decorated. While much of the prep work has been done (including carefully packing cameras into boxes), the actual main task remains. I’ve even gone out and bought a sack barrow in oprder to make the job of moving bookcases a bit easier. I would have hired a barrow, but the cost for a week’s hire was only a little less than buying one brand new so I figured I might as well do that instead. That way I can use it as long as needed and I can also sell it on afterwards and hopefully get a chunk of the money back.

Anyway, another diary-type post, and little in the way of photography talk. My apologies if this isn’t anyone who happens to be reading’s sort of thing – I’m hoping I might find some small break one day next week to actually go out and make some new photos and perhaps talk about that. Otherwise, I think my blog might need to run on archive pictures for a while.

Alice’s looks like it would be an interestig shop to browse around. I didn’t get chance to go inside, but from what I could see, and the items presented outside and in the windows, it looks like it will be full of all maner of interesting and esoteric bits-and-bobs.

A man walks down Portobello Road

Sounds like the start of a joke, doesn’t it? Sadly, it’s just the thread title, but if I come up with some sort of funny punchline before I finish typing, I’ll drop it in.

Today’s picture depicts a stall on London’s Portobello Road market, this one selling a curious combination of vintage football equipment, plus a selection of silverware. The chap walking by is wearing his facemask in that off-the-nose style that I’ve noticed many people adopting. Given that he’s outdoors, and that wearing a mask in this way is unlikely to be effective in preventing the spread of covid (or other respiratory disease), he’d probably be better off removing it altogether. I suspect (being a spectacles-wearer myself) that he probably pulled it down below his nose to prevent his glasses from steaming up with condensation. Given that I’ve forgotten to put on or remove my own mask on quite a number of occasions, I shall reserve criticism.

No punchline was forthcoming. Sorry to disappoint any comedy fans – my stand-up career remains stalled. You can have a rubbish haiku though…
