Pumpkins and leaves

I know I posted a shot of some pumpkins a few days back, but it actually IS Hallowe’en today, so I don’t think another one will hurt. Plus there’s a bonus shot of some colourful leaves (a potential candidate for a nice, difficult jigsaw puzzle perhaps). ๐Ÿ™‚

Both these were shot on a roll of Fuji Superia 100 which expired in 2007. I’m pretty happy with the results – I shot it at 64asa. A good job really, as I bought a bunch of it in from someone and have another nineteen rolls in the freezer.

Aerial

I recently shot a roll of expired Kodak Ultra 400 (it expired in March 2006) through the Pentax MZ-50 I bought for a pound at a car-boot sale in the summer. Sadly, the results have been pretty disappointing – the 28-80 lens I have on the camera seems to produce pretty soft results, which I’m unsure is because of the optical quality, or because it has an infuriating need to hunt for focus, quite often switching just as you fire the shutter; I also took a bunch of mostly uninspired pictures too if I’m honest, most of them of pretty mundane subjects; but the main disappointment is the sheer amount of curve on the negatives. They’re pretty much arched! It was a real fiddle to scan them, and the results are not my best.

All things considered, the shot here is probably the best of the roll. The colours are nice and the composition is pleasing in a minimal sort of way (I would’ve put the aerial on the thirds line, but the damn auto-focus kept trying to focus on the sky if I moved the viewfinder – even with the shutter half-depressed).

I’ve decided to sell on the rest of the expired Ultra 400 I have though (and probably the camera and lens too).

Easy like Sunday morning

While I was wandering around Victoria Quays on Sunday morning, wondering where the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was, I spotted what looked like a nice composition of the wharf area. As I was about to take the picture, this chap (who was with his kids and, I think, also looking for the motorbikes) walked into the shot and I think has improved it by adding a bit of human interest.

The scene brought to mind the old Halifax cashcard advert from the 1980s – this one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7nFru5iQg0

The empty playground

I spotted this deserted climbing frame the other week when I went to photograph the Humber Bridge (it’s next to the car park, and behind a building that seemed to be deserted – or at least was on the day I was there). It looked kinda forlorn on such a gloomy and drizzly day, but made for a nice shot.

Where Hancock & Lant used to stand

The photos here are of the Hancock & Lant tower. Where it stands there used to be a furniture retailer of the aforementioned name – we bought a bed, or a wardrobe, or something from there once. They moved locations years ago though. I remember visiting a few times, and one of the most memorable things about the location was that it was accessed via a narrow alley bordered on one side by the River Don, and the building itself on the other. Outside the store there was a tiny area for customer parking. Thankfully, the alley formed a one-way system allowing vehicles to exit at the opposite end to where they came in (where the columns are in the fist photo below), so avoiding any road (alley) blocks, or cars falling through the railings and into the river below.

These are both shots taken with the 23-year expired roll of Kodak Tmax 100 I shot recently.
