A third batch of suburban scenes – this time in black and white – that I shot just before Christmas. I never give up the chance to take photos on misty or foggy days unless I have no choice, so while this was only a quick half-hour walk, it still deliverd a handful of nice photographs.

The residents who live across the road from this country phone box seem to decorate it on various occasions (on the times I’ve passed it), and I think it makes a suitably festive image for Christmas Day.

Low winter sunshine is a wonderful thing. It makes scenes you might otherwise walk on past simply glow. This is a relatively ordinary terrace of houses, but the light is gorgeous. It illuminates things with a crisp, warm light and casts relief onto every surface. Lovely.

This is St Peter and St Paul’s church in Eckington, NE Derbyshire. I spotted the glorious light falling on it while I walked around getting images of suburbia (see the last two days’ posts for those).
I’m really happy with the way this is lit – the brightly illuminated tower and spire sitting atop the shaded entry, the light and shadow on the left-hand tree, and the lovely greens of the Yew tree – and all topped off by the blue sky and orange/brown fallen leaves.

A second trio of shots taken while walking around local suburban areas. The first was taken on the same day as those in yesterday’s post, the others a couple of days later. I’m not sure that these scenes would work under different conditions (although I guess maybe in fog, or at night could be interesting), but the low winter sun (and the long, deep shadows it casts) that we get in these northern latitudes makes things nicely photogenic.
While posting yesterday’s images I had the Pet Shop Boy’s “Suburbia” running through my mind. Today it was “The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire.

I walked to my local processing lab on 2 Dec to get some rolls of film developed. The morning was full of gorgeous low winter sunlight, so I snapped a few suburban scenes on my walk.
The Z135 has a significant amount of vignetting when shot at its widest focal length.

Here’s a tree that I photographed on the Longshaw estate while on my Peak District walk last weekend. It’s a conifer of some sort, but it’s needles are a lovely orange colour, making it distinctive amongst the surrounding trees. It has a lovely sloping trunk which gives its canopy a very attractive shape.
I’ve photographed the tree previously a couple of years ago and that picture can be seen in an earlier blog post.

This packhorse bridge spans Burbage Brook below the ancient hill fort of Carl Wark in the north-eastern Peak District National Park. The bridge is grade II listed and dates to around 1750. The bridge still gets regular use by hikers as the only span across the brook between the A6187 to the south and Ringinglow Road to the north.

After yesterday’s flooded field photo, today I present a field that is merely waterlogged.
The photograph has some similarities to the previous one beyond the water, namely the powerlines marching across the fields into the distance.
See! I told you I had a thing abouth photographing powerlines – this is three days on the trot that they, or similar transmission equipment, has featured.
As it no doubt will again.

I mentioned in yesterday’s post about my trip out to photograph the saturated fields that have resulted from the recent period of heavy rainfall, and here’s a picture of one of them. I have a number of others that I hope to post soon, but as my job has involved a trip across the country, I’m tired, so it’ll be a somewhat truncated piece today.
