Goldilocks

This structure stands on a sloping side street in Eyam, Derbyshire.

I’m not sure what the buildings are. Workshops? Outbuildings? Stables? Whatever their purpose, there was a definite air of Goldilocks about it – A Daddy Bear – Mummy Bear – Baby Bear arrangement of size. I felt it worthwhile of a picture.

Gert and Henry’s

This building, standing in the middle of the Shambles market in York, dates back to the 14th century in the oldest part of its structure. It was originally two separate buildings which, over the centuries, have become interconnected and now form a single property.

The building has been in commercial use since 1830 and has been host to a chemist’s shop, a hatters, a cafe, and is now home to Gert and Henry’s restaurant.

A couple of colourful buildings

Another couple of pictures from Leeds, linked by the theme of brightly coloured buildings. Or, in the case of both, brightly coloured reflections or coverings.

The orangey red tones in the windows of the first building are actually reflections of the bright orange netting covering the second, so they’re linked by proximity too (and, I think, they are consecutive frames on the roll of film).

It was my first day of Christmas leave today, and I spent it doing some Christmas shopping (I think I’m all done now), and then a trip to the cinema to watch Godzilla Minus One, which was really good. Considering it was made on a relative shoestring budget of, IIRC, $12 million, it looks outstandingly good. I found out when I got home that there’s a special black-and-white version being released in Japan which has been carefully put together (rather than just being de-saturated) which also looks awesome. You can see the trailer for that here.

Tomorrow, depending on the weather, I’ll either be wrapping presents and maybe developing a roll of film, or possibly heading out to make more photos somewhere. I also need to visit my dad, so maybe that as well.

The pointy end

These shots required a bit of contortion on my part to try and get things lined up how I wanted, particularly the first image. The shape of the building and the water feature have been nicely rendered by the lens and, while not super-wide, the 28mm focal length gave a nice effect.

A place passed on a walk

One of my primary means of taking photos is to just go for a walk somewhere promising and see what pictures present themselves. Even ordinary looking areas can usually turn up a wealth of subjects, particularly if the lighting or weather is agreeable for what you are seeking to achieve.

This is a photo (as, indeed, are most of the pictures I’ll be posting over the next few days) that was made this way. Just a place I walked past that looked like it would make a nice picture.

Italian building revisited, and a backlog of images.

Does anyone remember what I posted back on the 1st of June? No? Well, neither did I, but I knew that I’d posted another photograph of the building that features in today’s post.

It seems strange that photographs taken a couple of days apart, are seperated by over a month in the blog timeline.

When posting on the blog throughout the year my pool of available photos seems to go through peaks and troughs. Sometimes I pretty much have to make sure I go out and make new photos just to keep the blog fed with fresh material. At other time, like now, I have a big backlog of stuff to get through – maybe in the region of about 8-10 rolls of 135 and 120 format images, some already on Flickr, some yet to be uploaded there, some not yet scanned, and a couple of rolls still to develop.

The pile is growing to the extent that I expect that I’ll break away from posting one or two pictured per day and maybe post bigger sets. I have a couple of rolls shot with the GW690 for instance, almost all shot at the same location on the same day, that will make a post about that particular outing.

No doubt I’ll be scratching around for stuff again in a few months though.

St Mark’s Campanile

This tower is one of those that doesn’t look as big in pictures but which is huge when you get up close and personal. On my last visit to Venice I went up to the viewing balcony (without my wife, who isn’t keen on heights), but this time I just admired it from its base and the surrounding area.

I didn’t realise until recently that the tower completely collapsed in 1902 and the tower in place today was completed in 1912.

Old and new

I thought the juxtoposition between the ages and styles of these two buildings made for a good picture. The older chapel has the detail and the history, and the tower provides a sence of modernity and scale. I think they work well together.

The throat infection continues to improve, although not as fast as I’d like. I’m managing to consume more solid foodstuffs now, but there are still limits – an attempt at some bread was not favourable – and I have a constant feeling of nausea and fatigue, the former probably a side-effect of the antibiotics, the latter because I’be been eating well under a thousand calories for the past few days now. Hoperfully the next day or two will provide a marked improvement.
